Electronica artists Raffolade release new single ‘The Giraffe’

The Norwegian electronica artists known as Raffolade have released their latest official single, “The Giraffe.” The track has been proudly published on the Killerbörd Productions independent record label without the direction of the corporate music industry. An upbeat, sparkling, and kaleidoscopic shower of rhythmic notes, “The Giraffe” is the latest reason for fans of electronic music to take note of these creative composers from Norway.

Raffolade cite as main artistic influences Jedi Mind Tricks, Placebo, and Yello. Their own style hearkens to the original early ’90s sound that launched more electronic music subgenres than most audiophiles remember today, including house, acid house, Euro house, deep house, jungle, ambient, trance, and many, many more. It’s a sound filled with clever, amusing samples, rainlike patters of colorful synth tones, and a big, bouncy beat to get feet off the floor.

“We make silly music,” says Raffolade’s personal info section at their official website.

Certainly, humor pervades the entire repertoire, of which “The Giraffe” is only the most recent. Other notable and popular official releases available online include “Banshee,” “Deja Vu,” and two versions of “The Wizard.”

Asked to describe the overall theme of “The Giraffe,” Raffolade replies only, “The giraffe is the most beautiful animal in the world!” Asked to talk about how they got into electronica music production to begin with, Raffolade’s nameless mastermind remains a man of few words.

“I’ve been trying to get the voices out of my head!” he says.

The current official bio of Raffolade describes their inception and general character as, “From deep within the Norwegian Fjords comes a new electronica project. With friends from around the globe Raffolade has created some weird and disturbing tunes now to be unleashed on the unsuspecting public.”

“The Giraffe” by Raffolade from Killerbörd Productions is available online worldwide now. Fans of ’90s Euro-electronica should definitely get in early. Very early.

Los Angeles electronica band Tremble release debut single ‘Illumination’

The L.A.-based electronica trio called Tremble have released their much talked-about debut single, “Illumination.” The track is expected to drop on 31 October (Halloween). It is being published as an independent release without the influence of the corporate music industry. Sultry, stylish, sleek and writhing with groove, “Illumination” proves that Tremble is a modern music project to watch closely.

The sound of “Illumination” is shadowy, pulsing, ultra-cool and more than a little beautiful. It’s classy nightclub music, music to enjoy behind wraparound shades. It’s music to hack computers to. It’s sexy music, with a subtle undercurrent of masculine verve beneath the crystalline, silky singing of front-woman Kelly Sweet. Tremble’s female and male traits blend rather than contrast, not unlike the electronica of Depeche Mode or Bowie’s “Earthling” collaboration with Trent Reznor.

“We are inspired by old and new,” writes Tremble. “We particularly love the ’90s trip-hop sound of artists like Massive Attack, Portishead and bands that combine real instruments and electronics from that era, like Garbage. We also love electro-pop artists of today, like James Blake, and Banks.”

This live-instrument aspect is chief to the feel of Tremble’s music. Every sound is played by a musician, not an iProgram. That’s a real Fender Rhodes you’re hearing. That’s a guitar with a pedal effect on it. Those are live drums. The natural acoustics of the music coalesce in ways the most sophisticated software can’t emulate. In this way Tremble are closer to Slowdive than they are to Sneaker Pimps.

Behind Kelly Sweet are instrumentalists Haywire and Ajax. Each of the three are originally from Massachusetts but have lived in Los Angeles for some time now, writing, playing and producing both together and in numerous side projects, a number of which have received widespread radio circulation. Each has been playing music virtually from birth. Each is startlingly skilled in balancing excellent performance with just the right amount of restraint.

The result is that Tremble’s songs exhibit good taste in every respect: lyrics, creativity, execution, studio production – name it, they got it right. Passion without melodrama, solid beats without monotony, exceptional singing without ostentation, “Illumination” from Tremble is music you can hear on repeat many, many times and continue to find new perspectives from which to thrill.

BreatheHeavy.com calls Tremble “like quickly taking a shot of neon blue hypnotic hard liquor. In slow motion.” Yeah. It’s like that.

For fans of great songwriting, too, Kelly Sweet’s talent is refreshing in a modern era that has all but tossed out poetry in music altogether.

“’Illumination’ is about escaping from a bad relationship,” Sweet writes. “You realize that your partner is not whom he says he is. You have that sense of clarity, that moment of ‘illumination’ where you are finally living your truth, being free.”

Her lyrics, like her singing, are natural and intuitive. Each phrase belongs where it is, exactly so, and the chanteuse brings them to life with tones that are sensuous and warm, yet delivered with a scalpel’s precision that implies an unwavering power. The music fan gets the impression Sweet could belt out an Ave Maria that would call angels if she wanted to – but that would be far too obvious.

Neither Sweet nor Tremble are in the spectacle business. They’re not a towering wave. They’re the undertow.

“Illumination” by Tremble is available online worldwide 31 October 2015. Get in early, music fans. Very early.

Electronica band Daystar releases single ‘Thrasher’

The writers and producers of dark electronica music known as Daystar have released their debut single, “Thrasher.” The track is the first official selection to be made available from their upcoming album, “Rise,” which is expected to appear sometime in 2015. A second single, “Daylight,” is also scheduled for release soon. Shadowy, pulsing and otherworldly, Daystar’s “Thrasher” is a vibrant new take on the goth and industrial sound which ruled the underground dance culture at the turn of the millennium.

Asked to cite some main artistic influences, Daystar name only the Prodigy, whose popular “Firestarter” single represents only the tip of an iceberg six-albums deep. Fans of the seminal UK group will be enthusiastic on hearing Daystar’s “Thrasher,” which belongs to the same category of music but brings modern nuances to the old sound. This new, highly polished electronica style keeps its best qualities while eschewing those attributes which kept industrial music out of the mainstream for more than a decade.

A leading example of the Daystar sound, “Thrasher” has a deep groove which makes it perfect for dance clubs and parties, but also a grim chord progression and arresting sonic texture which will appeal to music aficionados listening on headphones or in their cars. Far more intriguing than EDM and having lyrical hooks and narratives not often heard in pop or dance music, “Thrasher” is a track which music fans of many genres will appreciate.

Daystar’s characteristic sound is a blend of haunting vocal work by members Ghost and Ms. Day (who does not sing on “Thrasher” but who regularly lends her voice) and instrumental work by bassist and guitarist Lefty. This mix of digital accompaniment and live sounds makes for a strong balance with a remarkably high emotional impact, one which the “Thrasher” single suggests will be thoroughly explored on their upcoming 2015 record.

Several music videos are in production to herald the release of their “Rise” album, one of which will accompany the release of “Thrasher.” Starring in the “Thrasher” video is Europe’s strongest man, Thor Juliusson, whom many will recognize as Mountain from the popular “Game of Thrones” television series. Daystar’s second single, “Daylight,” will also feature an official video, and the band have intimated that a steady flow of such visuals will be forthcoming, making their music not only a sonic adventure but also a cinematic experience.

Visual art has been a mainstay for the group since their inception in Iceland. Each member wears a mask sculpted specifically for each face which fully transforms the musician. Perhaps most remarkable is that of Lefty, whose green, electro-luminscent mask detects frequency range and thrums in cadence with the music.

Daystar’s official bio describes their sonic aim as, “pursuing a rather unique style of music – melodic, aggressive, beautiful and mysterious.”

“Thrasher” by Daystar is available online worldwide. Get in early, fans of electronica and industrial music. Very early.

Be sure also to watch for the releases of “Daylight” and the “Rise” album, as well as their official music videos which will be made available on their website and YouTube channel.

Singer Aria Sappho releases awaited debut album ‘Protagonist’

The singer and songwriter of electronica music known as Aria Sappho has released her highly awaited full-length debut album, “Protagonist.” The record has been published on the Sapphic Records independent music label outside the reach of the corporate music industry. In turns both shadowy and beautiful, forceful and delicate, frost-flecked and warm with life at once, the “Protagonist” LP is an arresting and elegant reminder of the sheer power of electronica when wielded by a vocalist and composer of Aria Sappho’s high, high caliber.

Aria Sappho (often stylized as aRia sappHo) cites as main artistic influences Sohn, Fever Ray, Imogen Heap, and Susanne Sundfør. Her own sound takes cues from the electronica genre of music to which these belong more than it emulates any one of them in a particular way. Sappho’s overall sonic texture glows with a hue that is purely hers. This individualistic quality is palpable, easily noted even in the record’s cover art, so much so that similarities between her “Protagonist” album and work by, say, Banks, Björk or the Sneaker Pimps actually seems coincidental more than intuitive.

Sappho’s emphasis on the unique seems not so much a conscious effort on the part of the artist as it does a direct effect of the album’s deeply personal nature. Since it reflects Sappho, herself, rather than attempts to approximate a particular mood, it cannot help but be radically distinctive.

“What inspired my songs is something I only share with people face-to-face,” writes Sappho. “My production style and expression has evolved and matured during the time I have been working on [my album] and that can be heard clearly if listening to the songs in the order I made them.”

By the same token, Aria Sappho doesn’t manipulate music to a mold she has in mind. She records her feelings as they come to her and pens her lyrics in such a way as to convey the truth without tipping her hand.

She writes of this: “I don’t write music for the sake of writing music, I do it because it’s the only way I feel that I can express myself freely. I use music as a way of expressing my emotions (something I’m not at all good at in ‘real life’). If you knew what I’m actually talking about in my songs, it gets way too personal, so the lyrics can always be interpreted in more than one way.”
While Sappho admits that her “Protagonist” record is about “my life, my journey to becoming who I am today, and how I experience life and society,” she also makes it clear that “I don’t want to put a message or meaning into people’s mindset when they are listening to my music. It’s about what they feel when they listen to it.”

“Protagonist” by Aria Sappho is available online worldwide beginning 11 April 2015. Get in early. Very early.
