Digital music artist DeepWise releases eight song LP album “A Way Out”

Salt Lake City digital musician DeepWise has released his latest LP record “A Way Out”

Salt Lake City digital musician DeepWise has released his latest LP record “A Way Out.” The album is eight tracks long comprising 47 minutes of solid play time. The music is expertly composed, incorporating various digital media sources as well as live rapping and keyboard instrumentation by DeepWise himself. Tracks are often upbeat, sometimes deep in the groove, always extremely melodic and lying somewhere between deep house dance club material and turn of the millennium techno.

DeepWise, although still a relatively new name on the scene, has deservedly garnered more attention than most enterprising digital musicians at this stage of their artistic career. His 2009 track “Another Wavelength” was ranked at number nine on InternetDJ.com’s weekly charts. His songs have reached approximately 44,000 streams and 1,000 downloads. His releases typically place within the top 20 upon publication to the InternetDJ website.

He is a trained pianist (not surprising, as he is also the son of a jazz piano player and a music scholar, respectively) and his skills are present on the record, but the most remarkable ability DeepWise flaunts on “A Way Out” is his adept linguistic maneuvering as a writer and rapper. His themes are intellectually stimulating and socially important, as well as movingly personal and often extremely uplifting.

In the whimsical introduction to the album DeepWise cleverly quips “How can you keep it real when your mind is fake?” Much of the material is geared towards finding one’s own meaning in life. Over the staccato of beats and crystalline whirring of his melodies he states, “I got a compass but I still don’t know my direction.” His alarm clock goes off. He wakes up and yawns, then says, “Oh yeah! This is how it’s supposed to start,” followed by the first proper track of the album.

“Follow your dream and you will survive…Because it is your destiny; this is the way it has to be,” he writes in “Fear of Destiny.” From the title track, “A Way Out,” come these rapid-fire lines: “Everyone’s had a dream where everything is pretend, but I am your friend; my mind is zen and time starts to bend, but I use my pen.” His background in transposing video game soundtracks as a very young man is delightfully showcased in the melody of the closing track of the record, “No Regrets.”

“This album was made to inspire others to get out of whatever rut they may be in,” says DeepWise. “Lately, I’ve found creativity in times when I need to just ‘get up.’ I also wish to encourage critical thinking and well-informed opinions. This album in particular emphasizes a path we should search for in our lives, through which we may find purpose and rise beyond our perceived limitations, breaking through the psychological barriers we impose on ourselves and others, and ultimately escaping the mediocre daily routines we put up with that further oppress and discourage us from following through with certain goals we have.”

Or, in short: “It’s about finding a way out of your current nightmare, pressing on, and transforming; It’s time to be the person you always wanted to be.”

DeepWise’s LP “A Way Out” is available everywhere online beginning December 29, 2012.

Comedy artists Bruce Cropley and Alan Morris release new satirical single “The Twelve Calls to PhoneCorp”

Comedy artists Bruce Cropley and Alan Morris have released their new satire “The Twelve Calls to PhoneCorp”

Comedy artists Bruce Cropley and Alan Morris have released their new satire “The Twelve Calls to PhoneCorp.” The single is an audio comedy play in the tradition of the best radio shows and is structured around the popular Christmas traditional, “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” It has a running time of approximately eight and a half hilarious minutes, all of which are entirely utilized, packed with more gags and one-liners than one might think possible in such a short span of time. This is the second collaboration between Cropley and Morris, who are from Australia and the Netherlands, respectively, and both of whom are accomplished musicians in addition to their other talents.

The satirical play tells a story to which anyone with a telephone can relate: the attempt to conduct simple, straightforward business through an automated telephone system that seems to serve no other purpose than to divert the communications of a company’s clientele. The pathetic protagonist, wonderfully (and ridiculously) played by Alan Morris, wants merely to pay his phone bill. Naturally, this basic desire is parried by PhoneCorp’s digital operator, whose lines are narrated by the infuriatingly soft-toned female voice of Macintosh OSX’s “Vicki.” Insanity ensues, becoming exponentially more bizarre and surreal with each of the twelve calls.

It would not do to represent here much of the well-penned and well-performed humor, but it may be related without ruining any of the listener’s fun that the first call to PhoneCorp results in the all-too-believable: “The system is currently down,” which is later followed by, “We are upgrading, please call again.”

By the sixth ring, there is apparently fish bait involved, as well as the brainwashing of children. High points include (but are in no way limited to) phone sex with camels, “suicide support,” and of course, the frustrations of humanity’s worst invention since global thermonuclear war, digital voice recognition.

The fantastic piece of audio satire is available everywhere online beginning December 29 of 2012.

French artist Dj Pad releases new album “Waiting to be Discovered”

French DJ artist, Dj Pad has released new album “Waiting to be Discovered”

French artist Dj Pad has released his newest long playing album, “Waiting to Be Discovered.” The record is extremely creative and unique, drawing from the widely varied techno and digital music genre in surprisingly different ways. Dj Pad opens up his record with sounds not unlike Moby’s, but quickly moves into unlikely, less mainstream areas such as eighties synth disco (see “Bleed Electric,” track four) and post-trance/psytrance (“Back to School” track eleven). Several touches of dubstep are present, as well as some wholly dubstep tracks, but the album has only one overarching tone and style – Dj Pad’s own – and he is as comfortable composing an old school early nineties deep house track as he is a 2012 dubstep epic.

In addition to the record’s versatility, it is also unusually enormous for a single release: “Waiting to be Discovered” is over an hour and a half long, though Dj Pad suggests that this could easily be enlarged to encompass much, much more. “I spend many hours per day composing tracks,” he writes. “At the moment, I’ve produced almost 35 hours of music.” Unsurprisingly, this remarkable collection of compositions shows a healthy use of differentiation. “I’ve slowly begun to producing some experimental tracks, and also to focus on more mainstream genres,” writes Dj Pad. “I’ve released five albums that are freely available, but now I’m thinking of going to the next level, although making money is not really the point.” The album title, therefore, is not allegorical: “I mostly want to increase my visibility.”

As influences Dj Pad names the artists Hallucinogen, ATB, Cosmic Gate, Angerfist, Afrojack, Sebastian, Hanz Zimmer, and Mike Oldfield, a list which stretches decades back and also into the contemporary releases category, which explains how Pad has become so elastic in his skills as a song smith. Another hint of this has to do with Pad’s own background as a musician. “I’ve started making electronic music simply by curiosity, though I really started playing music much younger; I’ve been playing accordion for 15 years.” This affinity with traditional instruments is perhaps how he has learned to leave space between his many layers of sound. Many modern digital artists simply throw track after track on top of one another, creating the same sort of mush that develops when too much of anything is mixed together.

“Waiting to be Discovered” is easily Dj Pad’s best collection of tracks to-date, and is widely available online beginning December 28 of 2012.

Oscar Trevino III and Grupo Potestad release new LP “Madre Soltera”

Oscar Trevino III and his band, Grupo Potestad, have released their new LP album, “Madre Soltera.”

Oscar Trevino III and his band, Grupo Potestad, have released their new LP album, “Madre Soltera.” The record is published by Christian record company Reloj Christian Records and features ten truly excellent songs in widely varied styles. The title track, “Madre Soltera” (Single Mother), is the most contemporary to the ear, with Trevino’s rich vocals pressed through the ever popular auto-tune effect – although unlike many modern artists, Trevino needs auto-tune like the sky needs blue.

“Ojala” (Hopefully) contrasts against this with a traditional Mexican southwestern sound that is rarely performed anywhere, anymore, and is absolutely marvelous to hear. “El Sembrador” (The Sower) is a celebration of rural life, one of the album’s most carefree moments. “Pobrecito Yo” (Poor Baby) is a lively dance track, and “No Te Desemparare” (Never Leave Thee) is a love song of the highest quality. “Madre Soltera” is sure to prove one of Trevino and Grupo Potestad’s finest records.

Of his background, Trevino writes, “I grew up around great musicians and songwriters that pioneered the regional Norteno Mexican sound.” That means an awful lot in this era of copies of copies of copies. Trevino is anything but a copy, however. He writes about the journey that led him to his authentic sound: “I grew up in that small town you see in the movies, the one with the blinking light near the railroad tracks, and the two-lane highway that runs for miles. Growing up, I was influenced by all kinds of music, from motown [such as] the Jackson 5, to Vicente Fernandez and Tony Sauceda. Around town I heard the sounds of Merle Haggard and Randy Travis playing from juke boxes in the mom-and-pop cafes.”

It was country music that inspired Trevino to write his songs as stories, but it was Spanish music that helped him to stay true to his roots, to his culture. In addition, Trevino writes that it was motown that helped him learn personal freedom: “[It was] the motown sound and what I learned about the history of motown that inspired me to start my own independent label, to always think outside the box about how I created my music, and with what freedom I managed my art.”

“Madre Soltera” is not without a message to its listeners, either. “Each song takes you through a different life experience,” writes Trevino. “The album as a whole entices you to not give up, that things are never as bad as they look. Reach into the deepest part of you and your faith and find the greatness in you.”

“All-in-all God has been good to me,” he writes. “He has allowed me to accomplish my dreams, but I feel the best is yet to come. I hope that those that listen to my songs are inspired, that their outlook on life is changed, and that somehow I changed their lives for the better through music, the universal language.”

Chicago hip hop artist JayDoubL releases new single “Naked”

Chicago based hip hop artist JayDoubL has released his newest single, “Naked,” featuring Shawnna Guy.

Chicago based hip hop artist JayDoubL has released his newest single, “Naked,” featuring Shawnna Guy. The instant urban classic is a heavy hitting, ultra modern drum and bass track with deep beats beneath widely varied instrumentation. Shawnna Guy and JayDoubL act out a romantic vignette in which the latter attempts to disrobe the former. The lyrics are well written with consistent snap and groove, and their diction is often amusing. For instance, Guy suggests herself as a potential Pam Anderson to JayDoubL’s Tommy Lee at one point, as well as comparing her derriere to that of famous backside flaunter Kim Kardashian.

Of the single’s hot and heavy background, JayDoubL writes, “The single has a girl and guy trading barbs about how the guy is trying to get her naked. It features Shawnna who is known for her sexually themed music content.”

JayDoubL himself is an artist of many different schools, having has his hands in the fashion, video, design and music industries. By day he is an operations executive who holds a Bachelors of Fine Arts, a masters in Integrated Marketing Communications, and is working towards his Doctorate in Business Administration. Born in Nigeria, he was raised in both Africa and the United States. He has termed his style of hip hop “hybrid music.” With his Hybrid Music, he seeks to “combine American, African and other cultures in sound and art with Afro, Hip Hop, and Dance music.”

JayDoubL lists Fela, Sunny Ade, Jay Z, Puffy Combs, and Bob Marley as his main influences.

“I have always had an ear for music, so I started producing,” he says.

JayDoubL has two previously released full length LP records, “#1” and “DoubLVisioN,” but this newest release shows him tacking in a slightly different direction. The single, “Naked,” is available everywhere online beginning December 28 of 2012.

Piano virtuoso Tyler Ray Johnson releases double LP album “Twenty Four Keys”

Tyler Ray Johnson, piano virtuoso extraordinaire, has released a double disc long playing record entitled “Twenty Four Keys”

Tyler Ray Johnson, piano virtuoso extraordinaire, has released a double disc long playing record entitled “Twenty Four Keys.” The album is a staggering feat by any estimation or standard, containing approximately seventy five minutes of playing time over twenty four tracks, each of which Johnson calls a key. By calling each of these compositions a ‘key,’ Johnson has contributed his work to a very long standing musical tradition: for hundreds of years composers have published their music in sets of twenty four numbered selections, one for each major and minor key of the scale (Bach, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, and Shostakovich are but a few composers who have done likewise).

The fact remains, however – and shockingly, stunningly so – that Tyler Ray Johnson has not “composed” these songs in the strictest sense. Each of the tracks on “Twenty Four Keys” is absolutely improvised. To be clear: these gorgeous inventions are short recordings of what the artist is capable of every time he sits at his instrument to play.

“I’ve been developing this style of improvisation lately,” writes Johnson. “The style is mixed with new age harmonies and rhythms that make the listener feel like they’re going somewhere.”

And go somewhere the listener does. His notes trill upward and trickle downward, spiral and tipple and occasionally soar, although for the most part, this set of recorded performances is well-suited for a calming atmosphere.

“This is an easy listening album,” says Johnson. “This album is a new aspect of music for me in the sense that it’s all improvised, but I still consider these compositions.”

Johnson has been playing since the age of eight and has studied various schools of music theory in Paris, Los Angeles, and at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music respectively. He has won numerous awards and accolades and performed live with many legendary artists around the world. He has since left off schoolwork in order to develop himself as a soloist.

The music fan can do no better for an introduction to this magnificent artisan than “Twenty Four Keys.” It will certainly not and by no means be the last release we hear from Tyler Ray Johnson.

Insane Lyrical Assassins release first LP “Set It Off”

The Insane Lyrical Assassins have released their first full-length record, “Set It Off,” to massive underground acclaim

The Insane Lyrical Assassins have released their first full length record, “Set It Off,” to massive underground acclaim. Although this is the first long playing album from the Insane Lyrical Assassins, ILA rapper and lyricist Caps released his solo LP “Da Come Up” in 2008. “Set It Off” is a thirteen track record comprising over half an hour of all original songs written by the Insane Lyrical Assassins themselves, Caps, Risk, and Gumby. Also appearing on the album is young female vocalist Shorty, little sister of siblings Caps and Risk.

The overall sound of “Set It Off” is extremely unique and promises to set the pace for future Insane Lyrical Assassins releases. Within moments of hitting “play” the listener will note that ILA does not attempt to emulate other pop rap groups, but rather revels in their own talent and inimitable character. Their sound is unlike anyone in the urban underground scene today, and they love to play with various tones, voices and rhythms from track to track. Beats are mostly inspired by the contemporary gangsta sound, and melody lines take a back seat to lyrical poetry, on which the Insane Lyrical Assassins have obviously spent much time.

In fact, if one trait were to stand out besides the Insane Lyrical Assassins’ remarkable style, it would be that of their lyrical quality. ILA makes a personal mission to use their expansive vocabularies in their music, which lofty and admirable goal puts them in an elite and extremely small crew of rap artists who have been known for caring about rap as an intellectual art form, such as “The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy,” “Pop Will Eat Itself,” and Tupac Shakur.

“We really like hip hop music,” writes the ILA, “especially when it comes to lyrics, but once the genre started to begin getting watered down we knew someone had to bring it back!”

With any luck, the ILA will have many opportunities to do so. “Set It Off” is released online everywhere on Christmas Day of 2012.

North Carolina band Stereospread releases breakout EP “The Ghost and the Grave”

North Carolina band Stereospread has released their new EP, “The Ghost and the Grave,” to loud critical acclaim.

North Carolina band Stereospread has released their new EP, “The Ghost and the Grave,” to loud critical acclaim. Stereospread refers to their particular style of music as “electropop,” or, as an early bio describes their music, “intoxicating electronic pop music that evokes the full spectrum of human emotion.” The album contains six tracks comprising twenty-five minutes’ worth of listening, making it a fairly comprehensive extended play record.

Stereospread’s sound is beautiful, spacious, full of rhythm and dark panache, at first reminiscent of early nineties house music such as Depeche Mode, and then more akin to modern acts like Florence and the Machine. Members cite artists such as Evanescence, Garbage, Curve, and Goldfrapp as major influences, but Stereospread does not sound derivative of them. Rather, they have synthesized many of the best traits of these musicians, and share commonalities with others, also. Stylings of Los Angeles and London gothic acts are also present, for example, a la Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cocteau Twins, or The Mission UK. This may partially be the result of the album’s story and setting, detailed below.

Stereospread’s “The Ghost and the Grave” is a concept EP about an imaginary town with an imaginary mansion looming over it called Braddock Manor. Naturally, nightmarish occurrances happened to the family that lived there long ago, as well as to the branches of their progeny, leading to the manor’s being abandoned. In a flourish of shameless creativity and colorful imagination, Stereospread includes with the physical copies of the album several “aged” documents that serve as lyric sheets, as well as props for the story of what happened at Braddock Manor.

Overall, “The Ghost and the Grave” is a top-notch release from a brilliant trio of musicians, highly recommended to fans of classy, stylish, electronic pop music and to anyone with a soft spot for fringe darkwave or nineties-era goth tunes.

Stereospread is James Hopkins, Sara Snyder, and Clark Eden.

Amanda Lynette McKenna releases fairy story and activities for children “Sundew the Flower Faerie”

Amanda Lynette McKenna has released “Sundew the Flower Faerie,” her fairy story and set of activities for children

Amanda Lynette McKenna has released “Sundew the Flower Faerie,” for children. “Sundew the Flower Faerie” centers around a faerie story, not to be confused with the common fairy tale; McKenna’s stories represent her own contribution to the traditional Celtic lore of her heritage. The “Sundew…” album also includes a set of nature activities and a theme song. It is the first installment of McKenna’s ”The Land of Elvindore” series. “Sundew the Flower Faerie” is being concurrently released alongside another of her “…Elvindore” titles, the children’s music LP album, “Singing with the Faeries.” “Sundew the Flower Faerie” runs for a total of 30 minutes, combining 12 minutes of storytelling with 18 minutes of activities.

The importance of storytelling has been emphasized by early childhood development professionals for centuries. “Sundew…” author Amanda Lynette McKenna reminds that bedtime stories can be a source of calming encouragement to children. “Bedtime is a great time to use a soothing voice to relax a child and give him or her a feeling of being safe,” she writes. She also reminds parents that it will not do to stop the story from being told should a child nod off. “When listening to my story CD,” writes McKenna, “it is important that your child hears the full story even if he or she has fallen asleep.” Her reason stems from simple, sensible psychology: “The unconscious mind needs to hear a happy resolution.”

McKenna’s “Sundew the Flower Faerie” also contains plenty of nature-conscious morals, an important and often overlooked part of youth education. These healthy lessons include the “Earth Ways Pledge,” which sounds like this: “A pledge comes from the heart. Place your hands over your heart, and say after me: I will watch out for all creatures – especially the creatures closest to me. I will be careful with plants – especially the plants closest to me. I will tread gently upon the earth – especially the earth closest to me.”

The theme song which runs through Sundew’s story is called “Harmony We Bring.” McKenna says of the message that “Sundew the Flower Faerie” brings to children, “Through singing and dancing, we can bring harmony in our lives and the lives that surround us.” The “Sundew…” CD concludes with the value, “Be gentle with nature,” and also the task: “It’s never too late to do the right thing.”

“Some of the ‘Sundew…’ activities and songs can be used for fairy parties,” McKenna writes, and parties there are sure to be, but all a child needs for a celebration of nature tonight is a telling of “Sundew the Flower Faerie” at bedtime. And remember, don’t keep from them the happy ending!

Amanda Lynette McKenna releases fairy music collection for children “Singing with the Faeries”

Amanda Lynette McKenna has released her collection of fairy music for children, “Singing with the Faeries.”

Amanda Lynette McKenna has released her collection of fairy music for children “Singing with the Faeries.” The album is intended for ages three through ten and is part of her “Land of Elvindore” series. “Singing with the Faeries” includes eight themes from “The Land of Elvindore.” Each song is full of whimsical beauty, energy, and fun, and provides children with an extremely imaginative environment in which to exuberantly celebrate and develop their own creativity. “Singing with the Faeries” contains fourteen tracks and comprises thirty minutes of playing time.

“I find all children live to sing and dance,” says McKenna, “which is a wonderful way to keep them happy. Fairy parties are a fun way to sing and dance using my fairy song CD.”

Creativity and fun are not McKenna’s only reasons for making her fairy music available for children, however. “I want children to have joyful hearts and loads of self esteem,” she says. “They can also develop social values and a love of nature through my fairy songs. They’ll have heaps of fun jumping up and following the actions to the songs, and using their vivid imaginations to become one of their favourite fairy characters.”

“Singing with the Faeries” contains widely various music, ranging from moderately paced waltzes to spritely jigs. Some of the songs are intended for dancing and listening only, but many are written with the intent that young listeners should actively take part, singing along with the song or following actions expressed by the singer.

In addition to providing creative, imaginative music, McKenna is also interested in preserving the lore of the Celts through her stories and music. “I like to write faeries the old Celtic way” she says, “because my ancestry is Celtic. Plus, the Celts strongly believed in the power of nature. The faerie stories, songs and activities are helping me with my goal of connecting as many children as I can back to nature.”

For parents wanting well-rounded, active and imaginative children with a healthy respect for nature, “Singing with the Faeries” by Amanda Lynette McKenna seems an indispensable step.
