Fobo feat. Jo Bogaert (Technotronic) releases new album ‘#1 On Analogue Waves’

The producers of electronic-krautrock known as Fobo have released their latest official album, “#1 On Analogue Waves.” Half of Fobo is house-music legend, Jo Bogaert of Technotronic (“Pump Up the Jam,” “Get Up,” “Body to Body”). The other half is synthwave producer titan Yannic Fonderie (Milow, Axelle Red, Calogéro). “#1 On Analogue Waves” contains 11 original Fobo tracks for an approx. listening time of one hour. It has been proudly published as an independent release without the involvement of the corporate music industry on the Zon Records music label. A starting project expertly composed using only two analog synthesizers, “#1 On Analogue Waves” introduces Fobo as the most legitimate synthwave project in recent memory.

Zon Records notes that Fobo’s “#1 On Analogue Waves” was recorded using only two analogue Minimoog synthesisers and an analogue-to-midi step sequencer (see below for technical notes).

“Our basic idea,” writes Bogaert, “was to reduce options drastically by limiting the sound sources to two monophonic synths and see how far this could lead us. We also chose to work with an analogue type of sequencer to kind of re-translate the nineties to the late sixties and seventies when the use of synthesisers was new and adventurous and led to a new kind of music.”

This anachronistic method results in a startlingly minimalist, clean sound which offers up its emotionally evocative, often highly narrative musical composition in a way any music fan can appreciate. Fobo go on to say this minimalism came out of a desire to unpack the layers of technology thirty years of unbounded scientific progress have slathered onto music.

“I guess it was a reaction to the overdose we both had by being surrounded, daily, by all kinds of synths and samplers and computers,” they write. “There is nothing wrong with those, but I must say that stepping back in time was great fun!”

Fobo note, also, the massive popularity of the sound they’ve helped pioneer over the course of their careers.

“We never could have imagined,” they write, “in 1993 when digital was the norm, that analogue synths and sequencers would have a complete revival and become so prominent in today’s technology-driven music scene.”

The two analogue Minimoog synthesisers and analogue-to-midi step sequencer used for “#1 On Analogue Waves” provided 16 linear steps of control voltages/triggers on each of the 3 rows. These Minimoogs were multitracked to an Otari digital multitrack recorder and recorded and mixed on a Euphonix CsII console. The only other additions were a TR-909 hihat on one track and an Oberheim OB-8 drone on another.

“Everyone will find a different message, or a different meaning, I reckon,” Pax says.

Music has been the main way for Attila Pax to express himself since the young age of 11 when he began at bass guitar. That led to piano. Born 1991, he has spent the last 15 years “making music in my room, the music I couldn’t listen to anywhere, the music I wanted to hear” by singing and with his guitars and piano. He performed in an electronic music duo 2008-2013 in Paris before finally going solo.

He describes his sound as “100% homemade electronic music with some rock influences, sometimes violent, tribal, energetic. Almost no samples except few voices. I work on a computer with a keyboard, singing into the computer microphone since I broke my mic a while ago. Sounds a bit dirty and I like it that way.”

He notes that his style is influenced by 1990s Britain, but that he’s “trying hard to give people something original – at least something they haven’t heard 1000 times in clubs.”

This dedication to earnestness is one of the guiding principles of LilD’s work. He isn’t called “TheReal” for nothing.

“Music has always been a part of who I am, even when I was very young,” he says of this. “Everything I say comes from my soul.”

And he has a lot to say. Raised by his mother after his father was tragically gunned down on his fourth birthday, LilD says he “realized how connected to music [he] felt” by the age of six.

“I would do little performances for my family members and they would laugh and think I was being silly,” writes LilD, “but I always took the music seriously.” And not just as a performer, either, but as a taker of the art: “I started listening to Lil Wayne for a while, but I stopped listening to him because I didn’t want to be like him.”

LilDtheReal had created a music group and label, Flow Kingdom Family, before even graduating high school. He created a studio in his grandmother’s apartment and made “side money” recording Canton artists. Today Flow Kingdom represents artists both in and outside of his actual family, such as Miss NaeNae (LilD’s sister), Servi Santana (LilD’s brother), Tasha Heartz (LilD’s wife), and TayThaKing, $Mon, and StoMel600, who also perform and record in the Canton area.

“My wife and I have been together for 10 years now and have 2 intelligent children, a boy and a girl,” writes LilD with pride. “Going through multiple hardships throughout my life up to now, I’ve gained a lot more energy and emotion for my music. I continue recording my own music in my apartment today.”

2Moellers releases new album ‘Discombobulated’

The songwriter and producer of indie dance and electronica known as 2Moellers has released his latest official album, “Discombobulated.” The album contains nine original 2Moellers tracks for an approximate total listening time of 35 mins. It has been proudly published as an independent release without the involvement of the corporate music industry.

Milan, Italy’s 2Moellers cites as influences Apparat, Trentemoller, Moderat, Four Tet, Depeche Mode, Thom Yorke, Radiohead, and Royksopp. 2Moellers’s own sound changes from release to release, moving from indie dance to downtempo, from downtempo to electronica, from electronica to electro-house or deep-house music, and often built on a minimalist aesthetic.

Asked to describe the overall meaning of “Discombobulated,” 2Moellers writes, “’Discombobulated’ is the best way to describe my mood in lockdown time – I guess that this word comes closest. The album was produced during the lockdown in Milan and is the result of all the emotions felt in ‘COVID19’ time. It’s my natural reaction. It’s based on the desire to go further, despite the hard times in the city of Milan, in Lombardy Region, in Italy, in Europe, and all around the world.”

The pressures of quarantine may have acted as a container for the writing and production of “Discombobulated,” but its music is anything but contained. That creative freedom runs throughout the record, even in the cover art by Daniele De Giovanni.

“Playing with lines, perspectives and geometry,” De Giovanni writes, “I found time broken. This is the place where our spaces change our points of view. I’ve tried to give different perspectives of the same dimension, like in cubism. It’s my description of the time and place where this music was born.”

Speaking of this concept, 2Moellers (born Sandro Moeller) says, “I would like to explain that art has no boundaries. Some can think that it’s a cliched speech, but I think that it’s important to believe in this, especially now.”

2Moellers’ “Discombobulated” was created with an unusually restrained DIY ethic which gives the album an even more minimalist tone than usual, even for 2Moellers.

“It’s completely homemade,” he writes, “using just PC, controller keyboard, and my headphones, without any other outboard machine. Even the mixing and mastering is homemade using only my headphones.”

This helps to communicate the message of “Discombobulated” overall.

“I think that, even with little gear, a thought can be expressed. Each song reflects an emotion, a sensation lived day-by-day.”

2Moellers began making dropping official releases in 2007 and since has had music featured on TV commercials, in fashion, in theater, and on terrestrial and Internet radio. He has collaborated with many professional pop, jazz and blues musicians, as well as the occasional actor. He has toured extensively throughout Europe, particularly in Italy, and is known for his ever-changing live performances. He has worked as a resident DJ for such venues and events as the Mongoose Festival and the Radio 105 Music & Fun Summer Tour. In 2019, he appeared on the “Quelli che il Calcio” TV show alongside the popular Italian singer, RAF. His songs are currently in rotation on Italy’s famous Radio Deejay FM station.
