Paula Punch releases new EP album ‘Lost Horizon Sessions’

The songwriter and producer of alternative rock known as Paula Punch has released her latest official EP album, “Lost Horizon Sessions.” The EP contains four original Paula Punch tracks recorded live in the studio for a total listening time of about 15 minutes. It has been proudly published as an independent release on the Punch Park record label. The latest in her constantly updating repertoire and her official debut live release, “Lost Horizon Sessions” is the public’s first glimpse of Punch + guitar without any additional accompaniment.

Sydney, Australia’s Paula Punch cites as influences Annie Lennox, Joni Mitchell, Chrissy Hind, Francoise Hardy, Bob Dylan, Ed Kuepper and Ron Sexsmith. Her own sound varies from release to release, generally falling within the broad margins of the alt-rock genre, but “Lost Horizon Sessions” finds her at her Annie Lennox-est, with welcome notes of Tori Amos and Jewel thrown in for good measure. Touching, human, and distinctly personal, “Lost Horizon Sessions” is Paula Punch’s most naturally elegant record to date.

This is a live recording session Paula did some years ago,” writes the Punch Park label of their new album, “at Philip Punch’s Electric Avenue Studios in Trafalgar Street Annandale.”

The recordings feature some of the last engineering work of the legendary Wayne “Groove” Myers who passed away in 2016.

“These recordings had been lost for a while as Electric Avenue had since moved its location,” says Punch Park. “They were rediscovered only recently. These tracks included ‘Lost Horizon’ which has appropriately become the EP title.”

Punch Park describes the mix by Groove Myers as “perfectly riding” Paula Punch’s emotional performances. The tracks were recorded after a period of solo gigs around Sydney including supporting spots with Ed Kuepper which Punch has called “intense.” The tracks on “Lost Horizon Sessions” are a window onto the sets Paula Punch played during that time.

Paula Punch has risen to become a staple in the Australian indie music scene. She usually tours and plays with her Sydney band, the Fireflys. Her debut LP album, “Don’t Look Down,” appeared in 2018. Punch has since toured California with Mark Punch and New Zealand-born Nashville artist Jackie Bristow. She won 2nd Place in the Australian Songwriting Awards’ Indie Rock 2018 (she took 5th in 2017). She is the founder and leader of her regular singer-songwriter showcase, “The Punch Sessions,” promoting local artists.

Alt-rocker Paula Punch releases new single ‘Move Over’

Australian alt-rocker Paula Punch has released her new official single, “Move Over.” The track comes on the heels of her popular December 2018 single, “Tonight,” August 2018 track, “Holy Water,” and her debut LP album, “Don’t Look Down,” which also dropped summer of ’18. Like the rest of her rapidly growing repertoire, “Move Over” has been proudly published on the Punch Park indie label without strings to the corporate music industry. Bluesy, rocking, and featuring a root-pure blend of acoustic and clean electric sounds beneath raw, heartfelt vocals, “Move Over” is the latest example of Paula Punch’s rise skyward .

Sydney’s Paula Punch has cited as influences Annie Lennox, Joni Mitchell, Chrissy Hind, Francoise Hardy, Bob Dylan, Ed Kuepper and Ron Sexsmith. Paula Punch’s style has range, moving from release to release with occasionally startling alacrity, and she has hinted that she expects her body of work after “Don’t Look Down” to shift. If “Move Over” represents this change, it’s one toward classic blues rock more than toward her more ’90s alternative tendencies, as the above roster of legends suggests.

In any case, captained by Punch’s strong, yet unassuming vocals, and backed by poppy bass lines and subtle, ’60s-style organ chords (think Monkees) “Move Over” by Paula Punch showcases her uniquely natural songwriting and tasteful studio production perhaps more than ever.

Asked to describe the overall meaning of “Move Over,” Paula Punch writes, “It speaks about a woman taking control of her life, and coming into her own power.”

This theme of feminine empowerment is one which runs throughout the Punch catalog. This makes sense, seeing as how Punch writes music organically and often gets inspiration from her own experiences, which happen to run in this vein.

I thought it was too late for me to release my music, but I soon realized that I was the main one stopping me!” writes Punch in a recent press release. “That was a turning point. I am now determined to release and perform my own music whatever. I also felt it was time to help make a cultural change – to be an example that you can make music at any age.”

Punch also sings for her live band, The Fireflys, featuring Robin Gist on electric guitar, Marko Simec on keyboards, Mike Rix on bass and Tim O’Driscoll on drums. The Fireflys will perform at the “Move Over” launch party at Django Camelot 7 February 2019.

Paula Punch releases new single ‘Tonight’

The songwriter and producer of alt-rock known as Paula Punch has released her latest official single, “Tonight.” Like Punch’s other popular recent releases, the single has been proudly published as an independent release without the involvement of the corporate music industry on the Punch Park record label. Coming on the tails of her popular “Holy Water” single and “Don’t Look Down” LP album, “Tonight” evidences yet again that the world has much music in store from Paula Punch.

For this, her fifth official release of 2018 (!) Sydney, Australia’s Paula Punch cites as main artistic influences The Pretenders, The Eurythmics, Blondie, Joni Mitchell, I’m with Her, LP, Sigrid, David Bowie, Elton John, John Lennon, Ron Sexsmith, and Lucinda Williams.

Built with all the trappings for which Punch’s fans have come to love her, “Tonight” stands out for having a cosmic tone which ripples out from it like the rings of Saturn.

With ‘Tonight’ we have tried to create a sense of interplanetary wonder,” writes the Punch Park label of the track. “Being in love is a ‘colliding of hearts’ and a celebration of being truly alive.”

Paula Punch is fresh off her Californian “Don’t Look Down” tour with Jackie Bristow and Mark Punch, yet already plugging tracks into another record planned for release in 2019. Her live band in Sydney includes the talents of guitarist Rob Gist (Girl Overboard) and keyboardist Marko Simec (Waiting for Guinness, Soul Movers), plus other players from the “Punch Sessions” show curated by Phil Punch of Electric Avenue Studios which showcases local songwriting talent.

The music of Paula Punch began with her performing in the Philharmonic Motet Choir and fronting several bands at her university. Soon after, she began working as a session singer, and quickly graduated to providing backing vocals for Ed Kuepper. Her solo career proved inevitable.

Tonight” was recorded at Sydney’s Electric Avenue Studios and Tone Master Productions, produced, mixed and mastered by Robin Gist, and recorded by Robin Gist with Philip Punch.

Alt-rocker Paula Punch releases new single ‘Holy Water’

Singer-songwriter Paula Punch has released her latest rock single, “Holy Water.” The track comes on the coattails of her popular full-length debut record, “Don’t Look Down,” and hints at a more forceful tone in the wake of her recent summer tour in California and Tennessee. Like the rest of Paula Punch’s repertoire, “Holy Water” has been proudly published on the Punch Park independent record label without the involvement of the corporate music industry. Verve-charged, passion-filled, and bearing hints of power pop this time, “Holy Water” is sure to turn heads of Paula Punch fans new and old.

Sydney, Australia’s Paula Punch is building an ever increasing fan base for her heartfelt music in her still-fledgling career as an indie rocker. In just over a year, she has gone from café open-mic favorite to the singer-songwriter of five successful singles, three official music videos, an American tour with talented singer-songwriter Jackie Bristow, and a debut LP record which continues to rack up download and streaming numbers. This newfound attention is unlikely to surprise those who know her, though.

The early musical experiences was mainly The Beatles played non-stop by my brother,” writes Punch. “After hearing this music – I had to get a guitar.”

Punch’s usual cited influences include Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronsandt, The Eurythmics, Traveling Wilburys, First Aid Kit, Bob Dylan and Ron Sexsmith. Her own style sometimes draws comparisons to the artists of the legendary Lilith Fair festival of the 1990s, particularly Sheryl Crow, Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan.

Her new single, “Holy Water,” bears this sound perhaps more than any of her previous releases, having the gritty tonality of Tori Amos while maintaining the acoustic-electric, power-strumming tone of Sheryl Crow. Perhaps ironically, while Punch has hinted that the track is part of a forthcoming larger group of songs with a common sonic feel, it is also a song written long before the distribution of her first official single.

“…About 20 years ago in our little house in Balmain Sydney,” says Paula Punch. “Our two young sons were asleep and my husband, as usual, was working a late one at the studio, and I was singing in the bathroom as I could shut the door so I didn’t wake the boys, and it always sounded much better in there. This song came to me almost fully formed as if I was channeling it. Strange and wonderful when that happens.”

Paula has her longtime friends and successful musical artists Jackie Bristow and Mark Punch, singing soulful harmonies. The track was recording at Electric Avenue Studios in Sydney by Phil Punch and Robin Gist. The funky keyboards are delivered by Marko Simec, drums by Pete Drummond and bass by Ian Lees.

It’s a heartfelt and emotional song about innate guilt, and release,” she says, “forgiving yourself and searching for new beginnings. Perhaps my Catholic upbringing has weighed in here, somehow. But it’s really a love song – finding someone who sees you as you really are ‘and who you want to be,’ unlocking your own passion for life. Sometimes it takes someone else to reflect back one’s one inherent spirit.”

The singer-songwriter of rock and adult contemporary music known as Paula Punch has released her debut LP album, “Don’t Look Down.” The record contains eight original Punch tracks for an approximate total listening time of 30 minutes. Like the rest of Paula Punch’s repertoire, “Don’t Look Down” has been proudly published on the Punch Park independent record label without the direction of the corporate music industry. Driving, grooving, powerful and uplifting, “Don’t Look Down” proves Paula Punch one of the most intriguing rock voices of 2018.

Sydney, Australia’s Paula Punch cites as main artistic influences Ed Kuepper, Joni Mitchell, Eurythmics, Ron Sexsmith, Shawn Colvin, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young.

Recently, I love Sigrid, First Aid Kit and LP,” she notes.

Her own style shares the same passionate, independent spirit which gave rise to names like Tori Amos, Sheryl Crow and Sarah McLachlan, and ultimately, to the now-legendary Lilith Fair of the 1990s. Fans of any of the above will find much to appreciate in “Don’t Look Down.”

Paula Punch’s debut LP showcases her as a varied songwriter, also. Songs on the record range from slow-burners like “Take Me Back” to pop cruisers like “Lucky Girl,” and from rock waltzes like “Watch Over Me” to the finger-snapping title track, “Don’t Look Down,” a radio-ready single which works to exemplify Punch’s album in theme as well as tone.

Paula’s music is personal,” says the Punch Park label of its namesake artist, “yet it talks to women about living a modern life in an urban environment with all the joys and struggles that emanate from the constant juggle.”

Paula Punch, herself, says, “The music has changed my world. I feel like a teenager again – inspired, energized and excited to tell more stories through my songs.”

Paula Punch began her music career in earnest in 2017 and wasted no time in achieving Fifth Place in the ASA Songwriting Competition for her single, “Take Me Back.” Her music is studio produced by Rob Gist (guitarist, Girl Overboard). Her musical creativity spun from her creation of Punch Park, which has been described as “a website dedicated to expressing her creativity through fashion, music and art, and sharing her stories by recording and performing her own songs.”

Singer-songwriter Paula Punch releases new single ‘My Other Shoe’

The international singer-songwriter known as Paula Punch has released her latest official single, “My Other Shoe.” The track comes on the heels of her popular November release, “Don’t Look Down.” It is expected to herald the upcoming release of her debut LP record, the title of which has not been announced. Fun, genuine, and assertive in the way her fans have come to expect, “My Other Shoe” is the latest reason for fans of the singer-songwriter genre to sit up and take note of this rock-n-roll chanteuse from Australia.

Paula Punch has cited as main influences for her new song Ron Sexsmith, LP, Joni Mitchell, Lucinda Williams, the Pretenders, Annie Lennox, the Seekers, Fleetwood Mac, and Elton John. Her usual style takes a rock form not unlike those of Sheryl Crow, Melissa Etheridge and Sarah McLachlan, et al. Fans can expect the same soulful and inspiring voice they’ve come to love in “My Other Shoe,” this time largely in the McLachlan and Tori Amos vein accompanied by piano and a haunting electric guitar.

Speaking of the themes of “My Other Shoe,” Punch writes, “’My Other Shoe’ is about passion and living in the moment, being open to where passion leads and listening to our heart instead of the voices in our mind, facing fears head-on and not being confined by walls around us. It’s about feeling the strength of our spirit.”

Paula Punch began in music young, performing at Sydney Town Hall at an early age, performing in the Philharmonic Motet Choir at various Sydney Opera House concerts in her late teens, and playing in bands in her early 20s. In college she began singing for a variety of advertising campaigns, which led to her meeting legendary studio maverick and future husband, Philip Punch (Electric Ave. Studios) who recorded and produced her first demos.

After starting a family and working as a fashion buyer for a time, Punch has said, “I needed to find my own voice.” She has facilitated this through her Punch Park website, which has been described as “dedicated to expressing her creativity through fashion, music and art,” where Punch shares her stories by recording and performing original music.

Punch herself has described her music as “personal, yet it talks to women about modern life, living in the city and the joy and struggle that comes from the constant juggling.”

Paula Punch was awarded Fifth Place nationally in the ASA Songwriting Competiton for her “Take Me Back” single, which is expected to appear on her forthcoming debut LP album. Her recent material has been produced by Rob Gist, guitarist on “Girl Overboard.”
