Guitarist and songwriter Max Dolan releases new LP ‘Beyond the Jupiter Horizon’

The guitarist and songwriter known as Max Dolan has released his latest LP record, titled, “Beyond the Jupiter Horizon.” The album is comprised of eight wholly original, new Dolan tracks for an approximate total of 24 minutes’ worth of playing time. Music fans previously unacquainted with Dolan will marvel at his musical intuition and willingness to follow a melody where it seems to lead him, while veteran Max Dolan fans will be delighted with the spaciousness and versatility of this newest sonic adventure.

Joining Dolan on this record as with other releases is percussionist Kofi Baker, son of legendary Cream drummer, Ginger Baker. Their interaction is fluid and transcendent, rather than binary in nature. Like the natural relationship between the sky and sun, they are independently perfect together. This is partly owed to Dolan’s artistic drive, which comes from an innate and heartfelt desire to communicate his appreciation for beauty in the universe.

“I first got involved in music through hearing things I found beautiful and wanting to replicate these things with a guitar,” he writes. “The sound of the sea, birds singing, a widow weeping – anything and everything inspires me.”

When asked to name musical influences, Dolan names surprising sources of inspiration, including the works of Salvador Dali and Gustav Klimt.

“Anything I hear or anything someone says to me, I create musically,” Dolan explains. “The guitar is like a paintbrush to me.”

The connection between the visual, fine arts and the musical arts may not seem obvious to the casual music listener, but for Dolan the two overlap, intertwine, and even blend. He uses terminology from each school in describing his views of the other.

“My album isn’t psychedelia,” he contends, “it is surrealism.”

In talking about “Beyond the Jupiter Horizon” he even alludes to philosophy.

“It asks you questions,” he writes. “Questions are important to ask yourself. Do I really exist?”

Dolan speaks candidly of his creative method: “What I do is, I take two ingredients, time and your imagination, and I bend your imagination with time into art, which you hear. I’m fortunate to have a drummer who is just as insane as me, and as artists we are all insane to question existence and want to bend it to our will … But that is where the joy lies.”

Guitarist Max Dolan returns with new single “Midnight Venus Silver Sunrise”

Jersey, UK Guitarist Max Dolan has released his newest single, a psychedelic drum and guitar instrumental called “Midnight Venus Silver Sunrise.” The single has a playing time of four and a half minutes and features the same far-out guitar work and composition that Dolan has come to be known for. Previous titles such as “Lilac Moonrise” and the “Distant Horizons” EP have cemented Max Dolan as a mainstay of the modern psychedelic rock movement in the United Kingdom, as well as abroad, and “Midnight Venus Silver Sunrise” stands as proof that his repertoire and considerable talents are still steadily, and marvelously, growing.

The new single from Dolan features his own brand of cosmic guitar playing braided with the ambient, mesmerizing percussion work by his drummer, Kofi Baker, son of Cream drummer Ginger Baker. True to Dolan’s artistic character, it is not a work that espouses a particular theme or philosophy, but rather art for art’s sake, a rare and beautiful thing in the music scene of today.

“This is the first finished track myself and my drummer Kofi Baker have done,” writes Dolan of the project. “I just kind of let loose on the track playing. I guess you could call it psychedelic rock.”

“Midnight Venus Silver Sunrise” is all about sound and music, like a classical composition for drums and guitar. Its chord progressions wash over and under like waves on a moving tide, its shifting tones coming and going as they please like gentle wind through an open window.

“There aren’t any words or singing,” says Dolan. “We’re just taking that route of getting down to the playing now. It’s quite out there, musically.”

Dolan began his music career as a session musician for the Jimi Hendrix Experience on the Experience sessions album.

“Midnight Venus Silver Sunrise” by Max Dolan is available worldwide beginning April 13, 2013.

London musician Max Dolan releases “Distant Horizons” EP

English singer-songwriter and guitar virtuoso Max Dolan has released his latest EP, “Distant Horizons,” on the Isis Music Group label.

English singer-songwriter and guitar virtuoso Max Dolan has released his latest EP, “Distant Horizons,” on the Isis Music Group label. The record includes five original tracks over approximately 18 minutes of playing time. It is one of the most definitive examples of Dolan’s music since “Lilac Moonrise,” published earlier this year.

Consistent with the rest of Dolan’s catalog to date, The overtones of “Distant Horizons” are aeriform and cosmic. The general feel is reminiscent of what the year 2000 came to call “Brit pop” in the United States, which categorized bands such as The Verve, Pulp, and The London Suede. These bands used powerful guitar techniques that concentrated on a song’s mood, rather than the showy, look-what-I-can-do soloing popularized by heavy metal, and this principle is omnipresent in Dolan’s “Distant Horizons.”

“…Horizons” is also characterized by jazzy percussion that never slips into a basic one-two beat or becomes predictable in the background. These drums are the result of Dolan’s collaboration with Kofi Baker (son of Cream drummer, Ginger Baker). Herein is added a strong classic rock element to the record, which plays upon the work of progressive rock bands such as Pink Floyd, Yes, and others. This is not to say that the EP is easy to pin down with a genre – it is not. The music is Dolan’s own, together with Baker, and to imagine that it might sound derivative would be a grave oversight.

Dolan was born in 1985 in Jersey, United Kingdom. He is known for a flashy stage performance that is the result of much obvious skill and time spent honing his inherent talent. This can include such classic stage magics as playing behind his head or with his teeth, such performance flair being more than somewhat rare to the modern stage today. He began his professional career as a session musician for the Jimi Hendrix Experience on the “Experience Sessions” album. His famous arctic-white, Gibson SG Special Limited guitar he has dubbed, “Penelope, the Gypsy princess.”

When asked about the themes of his music, Dolan says only, “What I try and do with my music is to take people somewhere beautiful, in their hearts and in their minds. There isn’t a ‘message’ to it, as such.”

“Distant Horizons” by Max Dolan is available worldwide beginning March 15, 2013.

London virtuoso guitarist Max Dolan releases new EP “Lilac Moonrise”

English singer-songwriter and master guitarist Max Dolan has released his latest EP, titled, “Lilac Moonrise,” on the Isis Music Group label.

English singer-songwriter and master guitarist Max Dolan has released his latest EP, titled, “Lilac Moonrise,” on the Isis Music Group label. The record is comprised of seven original tracks in approximately 22 minutes of listening play. It is the most recent official collection of studio music from Dolan to date, and promises to be the harbinger of many full-length records to come.

“Lilac Moonrise” has an ethereal quality in terms of orchestration and tone that is reminiscent of some of the most fantastic and unique post-modern experimentalists from the late sixties and early seventies, such as Lou Reed’s infamously eclectic band, The Velvet Underground. The sound also utilizes an ambient, spacious atmosphere such as Echo and the Bunnymen were known for, as well as the lesser-known Mission UK. These comparisons do not do justice, however, to the overarching classic rock element of “Lilac…,” which also brings to mind experimental classic-rock bands like Pink Floyd, Yes, and others. The record, in fact, is unique in many ways that resist general categorization.

Dolan was born in 1985 in Jersey, United Kingdom. He is known for a flashy stage performance that is the result of much obvious skill and time spent honing his inherent talent. He began his professional career as a session musician for the Jimi Hendrix Experience on the “Experience Sessions” album. His infamous arctic-white, Gibson SG Special Limited guitar he has dubbed, “Penelope, the Gypsy princess.” 2011 saw the beginning of his chemistry-charged collaboration with percussionist Kofi Baker (son of Cream drummer, Ginger Baker).

When asked about the themes of his music, Dolan says only, “What I try and do with my music is to take people somewhere beautiful, in their hearts and in their minds. There isn’t a ‘message’ to it, as such.”

Art for art’s sake is an increasingly precious thing.
