Johnathan|Christian releases new single ‘Hurt’ feat. Thomas Gabriel

The songwriter and producer of modern goth and darkwave known as Johnathan|Christian has released their latest official single, “Hurt.”

Johnathan|Christian’s “Hurt” also features the talents of Thomas Gabriel, Clause Larsen (Leæther Strip) and multi-media artist Victor Devilbliss AKA Michael Bann (Advent Sleep).

The single has been released concurrently with the “Leæther Strip” and “Michael Bann” remixes for an approximate total listening time of 13 minutes. It has been proudly published as an independent release without the involvement of the corporate music industry. Sonorous, melancholy, and entirely heartfelt, “Hurt” showcases Johnathan|Christian as one of the most intriguing modern goth and darkwave artists of the year so far and promises that they has plenty more where that came from.

Darkwave and death rock’s Johnathan|Christian cites as main artistic influences Depeche Mode, Joy Division Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Mission, Muse, Radiohead, Christian Death, Killing Joke, Skinny Puppy, and Leæther Strip. Johnathan|Christian’s own sound takes elements from each of these and adds something fresh and unique for a result unlike anything today’s music fans have heard before. With an emphasis on passion, vocal delivery and instrumentation, “Hurt” by Johnathan|Christian has a little something for everybody.

Asked to describe the overall meaning of “Hurt,” Johnathan|Christian writes: “While Johnathan|Christian were working on their latest album, Henry Vaccaro Jr. reached out to propose a collaboration with a family member of a very special musical clan.

My father was a close friend of Johnny Cash, whom he had met through his role with the Kramer Guitar Company which grew to become the largest American Manufacturer of electric guitars in the 1980s. My dad was a huge Johnny Cash fan and brought the entire band guitars in 1976 and our families have been friends ever since. I first met his oldest grandson, Thomas [Gabriel] when we were children, and now watching him break out on his own, I was blown away by his uncanny vocal resemblance to his grandfather. His phrasing, tone, spirit, drive and humility are all these remarkable traits passed down from the Man in Black. I was already a fan of Johnathan|Christian and when I first heard Thomas covering ‘Hurt’ I thought between both parties, they would not only pay homage to Thomas’ grandfather but also to the original Trent Reznor version.”

Their current official bio relates: “For Johnathan|Christian members Johnathan Mooney and Tiger Koehn, coming up with something that would remotely do any kind of justice to both originals was a daunting task.

‘Trent Reznor’s “Hurt” was such an emotional song that told a very dark tale,’ says Mooney, ‘and then you have Johnny Cash’s version and that was like a huge kick in the stomach that just left you speechless in it’s rawness.’

For this to work, it was important for Johnathan|Christian to tell the story in a different musical light.

‘While Johnny Cash sings about all that’s left, I felt that grandson Thomas, whom while also had his own share of demons, is now on the beginning of a journey.’ Says Mooney. ‘An “Empire of dirt” is not only what we end with, but it’s also all we start with.’”

Johnathan|Christian’s previous releases such as 2013’s “Beautiful Hideous” have garnered more than 2.5 million streams.

Hurt” by Johnathan|Christian on the LABEL label is available from over 600 quality digital music stores online worldwide now. Get in early, modern goth and darkwave fans.

Electro-goth musician Viii releases singles “Witchlust” and “Rev 22:20”

The music artist of gothic electronica known as Viii has released his second pair of singles for 2017, titled, “Witchlust / Rev 22:20.” The tracks have been proudly published on the Voodoo Creation Records independent music label, along with the rest of the Viii catalog. Bringing the dark, suave sound fans of Viii have come to expect in spades, “Witchlust / Rev 22:20” is the latest reason fans of goth and electronica have to sit up and take notice of this shadowy studio project in 2017.

Viii (pronounced ‘Vee’) cites as main artistic influences Maynard James Keenan (Tool, A Perfect Circle) Crosses, Banks, Nine Inch Nails, Portishead, Massive Attack, and Prince. In fact, the single’s B-side, “Rev 22:20,” is a cover tune of an original track by Puscifer, headed by the legendary Maynard Keenan. This is the second such arrangment for Viii, whose recent “Lovedecay” single came bundled with a B-side cover of “Lovesong” by the Cure.

Asked to describe the themes of his latest single, “Witchlust,” Viii writes, “Witchlust is a song where the protagonist is seduced and manipulated by a girl, going against his morals and becoming a person he hates. After falling and committing to the relationship completely, he is then discarded and left unable to fully connect with future romantic partners – becoming as cold and heartless as the girl that transformed him was.”

The Puscifer cover, “Rev 22:20” makes an erotic play on the prominent Bible verse which begins, “I am coming quickly.” It moves from here to describe a sexual obsession with a beautiful woman who is damaging to the narrator, who implores the listener to refrain from falling under her spell. In this way, the track braids seamlessly with the situation described in “Witchlust.”

“Witchlust / Rev 22:20” by Viii becomes available 2 June 2017 from over 700 quality digital music stores online worldwide.

Experimental Moog mastermind Stark Sound Lab releases ‘Wally’s Woes’ single

Stark Sound Lab has released his newest electronica single, “Wally’s Woes.” The track is the tenth official release to come from Canada’s Stark Records independent music label. Marked by driving percussion, fugue-like chord progressions and SSL’s inimitable Moog melodies, “Wally’s Woes” proves Stark Sound Lab to be among the most inventive electronica artists for 2017.

In the past Stark Sound Lab has cited as inspirations such legends as Vangelis, Kraftwerk, Hans Zimmer, Brian Eno, and Keith Emerson – Emerson being ever-present in “Wally’s Woes” – but SSL insists that music artists are not the source from which their latest track has sprung.

“In the case of ‘Wally’s Woes,’ there were no outside musical influences, just a gut-wrenching emotional reaction,” writes Stark Sound Lab. “Wally’s Woes is a very emotional song that was written, performed and recorded while our mascot, Wally (four-year-old Boston Terrier) was in hospital fighting for his life after being poisoned.”

The track was recorded live using vintage, highly prized Moog keyboards: a System 55, a Voyager and a Model 15, each of which instruments boasts its own fan club around the world. It was dedicated to Wally the dog at Stark Records’ website while he was still suffering from his illness.

“Wally is a shining star at Stark Sound Lab, barking at delivery vans and welcoming visitors,” writes Stark Sound Lab. “Our hearts sank knowing he might not return to us. So we did everything we could, got him the best veterinarian, prayed, and wrote music in his honour.”

It has been surmised that poisoned dog treats had been left on the sidewalk in a random act of malice. Thanks to Stark Sound Lab – and an excellent vet – this black intent has had the opposite effect of giving enjoyment to music lovers everywhere in the form of this raw, powerfully evocative, electronic prog-pop single, “Wally’s Woes.”

And after all, there is a happy ending.

“Our prayers were answered when Wally was able to leave hospital and join us once again. It was truly a Christmas Miracle that Wally survived and is now with us again watching over Stark Sound Lab.”

“Wally’s Woes” is available online worldwide from over 700 quality digital music outlets now. Get in early.

Joseph Freije releases fourth LP album for 2016 ‘Hiding in the Light’

The eclectic composer of music known internationally as Joseph P. Freije has released his fourth full-length record for 2016, “Hiding in the Light.” The album contains 13 original Freije tracks for a listening time approaching a full hour. Like all music by Joseph P. Freije, it has been proudly published on the Phrygian Music independent record label without the support or direction of the corporate music industry. Fantastic and fugue-like, clever without pretension and kaleidoscopic with just a touch of psychedelia, “Hiding in the Light” is one of the most accessible experimental records from Joseph P. Freije yet.

2016 has been a remarkable year for Joseph P. Freije, whose music expertise delves into classic rock, jazz, classical, experimental, electronica and blues music, just to name a few. While this new offering, “Hiding in the Light,” is a singular blend of electronica, postmodern jazz and experimental music, he has released no fewer than three other full-length records this year in various genres, with yet another rumored to be on the way. These previous LPs include “Elements of Evidence” (alt-rock), “Electric Phlower” (dance/electronica), and “Jazz Beyond the Chaos” (postmodern jazz/electronic jazz).

Joseph P. Freije has at different times named as main artistic influences Pink Floyd, the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Satriani, Jeff Beck, Peter Kater, Nicholas Gunn, Carlos Santana, Jesse Cook, Spyro Gyra, the Moody Blues, Jefferson Starship, Thierry David, and the great classical composers. While this paints an image of an open-minded music fan with top-shelf tastes leaning toward the best of the classic-rock legends, the list does not at all elucidate the experience of hearing a record published by Phrygian Music.

Much of this stems from the general head space, paradigm and philosophies of Joseph Freije and Co. Some of his albums are steeped in thought, symbol, and implication, while others are mostly experiential – art for art’s sake. “Hiding in the Light” seems mostly of the latter persuasion.

Asked to speak on the themes of his new record, Freije says, “Life is meant to be more fun and pleasant for more people more of the time on a daily basis.”

Music fans who wrap their ears around “Hiding in the Light” by Joseph P. Freije are certain to accomplish this in short order.

Joseph P. Freije’s “Hiding in the Light” is available online worldwide at over 700 music stores now. Don’t miss the rest of Phrygian Music’s catalog, also available anywhere great music is digitally sold.

Funeral Strippers release new LP ‘Wonder Woman’

The electronica music duo known as Funeral Strippers have released their newest LP album, “Wonder Woman.” The full-length record contains 15 original tracks for an approximate total listening time of one hour, making for a comprehensive Funeral Strippers experience for those not yet acquainted with the band. It has been proudly published on the FunStrip Records independent record label without the direction of the corporate music industry. In turns danceable and evocative, emotionally complex and irresistibly fun, “Wonder Woman” is a standout Euro-pop album music lovers around the world are sure to appreciate.

Australia’s Funeral Strippers are Adrian Klineberg and Dan Karni. They cite among important influences Radiohead, David Guetta, Turin Brakes, Manic Street Preachers, and Calvin Harris. While they share a great many sonic similarities with these, Funeral Strippers music can’t be imagined as an amalgam of the above. Their music includes many disparate elements, such as ’90s Euro-house music, dancehall, ’80s pop, and even a bit of goth.

The record manages to hit nearly every note on the emotional scale, having moments both high and low. It offers exuberant songs and melancholy songs, neither pushing to a melodramatic extreme. Songwriting on “Wonder Woman” by Funeral Strippers is natural, infectious, and narrative without being pretentious. Studio production is spotless, even striking. All performances both vocal and instrumental are easily as good as those boasted by the best-loved records in the world.

In addition to the performances of Klineberg and Karni, themselves, “Wonder Woman” also features the considerable talents of Dave Gdanski and Alex Burkoy.

Speaking of the themes of their new LP, Funeral Strippers’ Klineberg writes, “The album was written for a woman who has had some real tough times. We met 20 years ago and 20 years on, I, Adrian, have rekindled the relationship.”

But the record isn’t strictly personal. On the contrary, it speaks to everyone who’s experienced hardship and needed (or needs) to persevere.

“The album exudes strength and power to get through the hard times,” writes Klineberg, “but at the same time it expresses an amazing love story.”

“Wonder Woman” is the most prominent official release from Funeral Strippers since their 2013 debut LP, “There’s a Time and a Place for Dancing.” The record surprised critics for its broad variety, undeniable pop appeal, and cheeky sense of humor.

On the release date of their new album, Funeral Strippers offered this message to their fans: “Thanks to the moon and back for the remarkable love and support through the tough times!”

“Wonder Woman” by Funeral Strippers is available online worldwide now. Get in early, fans of dance and electronica. Very early.

It has been proudly published as an independent release without the support or influence of the corporate music industry. Sleek, sexy, classy and full of rhythm and bass, “The Lucid Dreamer” is Howard Maple’s most futuristic and imaginative album to date, and a dazzling introduction to his sound for audiophiles not yet acquainted.

In addition to the considerable songwriting and production talents of Howard Maple, “The Lucid Dreamer” also boasts strong, elegant vocals by Pernille Cortado, Marlene “Marla” Hansen, and Mhyst.

A true music aficionado, himself, Howard Maple’s songs bespeak an unfailing good taste that comes from his deep passion for listening. Speaking of these roots, he writes, “I listened a lot to Future Sound Of London, the ORB, the Beastie Boys, Herbert, Burial, and the Bristol trip-hop bands back in the day (Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, Morcheeba…).”

An enthusiastic fan of the sound, he goes on to name some favorite labels, as well: “… Labels like Ninja Tune, with artists like Amon Tobin, the Bug, Coldcut, DJ Vadim, Funki Porcini, Mr. Scruff. Warp Records artists like Flying Lotus, Aphex Twin, Hudson Mohawke, Squarepusher, Nightmare on Wax, Black Dog …”

Longtime fans of legendary digital music mixers such as these will recognize the thread of high, high quality running throughout. Beside them on that top shelf, Howard Maple’s repertoire fits right in.

A polished, surgically precise album with melodies that hook and beats that drive, “The Lucid Dreamer” has elements of trance, house, ambient, and other popular postmodern music genres, but in terms of songwriting, warmth, and tone, it is all electronica, through and through. This particular brand of electronica from Howard Maple is a brilliant blend of contemporary digital styles laid down over a razor-sharp and rock-solid old-school structure. The balance of new and old makes for an infectiously enjoyable record that can easily be listened to on repeat for hours.

Howard Maple has been making digital music since he began purchasing synths and sequencers at the age of 14. His first productions were programmed in MIDI and CV/Gate. After moving to the Norwegian capital of Oslo at 19, he hooked up with some of the underground’s most influential electronica artists, including Päronsode, Folk og Røvere (Flunk), Sternklang, Perculator, Palace of pleasure, Prince Thomas, DJ Strangefruit (Mungolian Jet Set), Jaga Jazzist and many more. Since that time he has played in venues across Norway in music-loving cities such as Oslo, Arendal, Kristiansand, Stavanger, and Trondheim.

Howard Maple’s new “The Lucid Dreamer” is preceded by his “0313 Perspectives” LP, which appeared in 2013, his “Mapleism” full-length, published on the Beatservice Records label in 2003, and his “Inside” debut LP from C+C Records in 2001. All of these remarkable albums remain available from the artist’s official website (link provided below).

“The Lucid Dreamer” by Howard Maple is available online worldwide beginning 14 December 2015. Get in early, trip hop fans. Very early.

The digital music artist known as Opinash has released his new single track, “Basic Instinct.” The single has been published as an independent release outside the sphere of control of the corporate music industry. It is the latest part of a series of singles from the artist which have appeared in 2014, including such popular tracks as “Liquid,” “Shine,” “People Having,” and “Over the Horizon.” Glossy, melodic and elegant, pulsing, booming and energizing, “Basic Instinct” by Opinash is a digital anthem for fans of every music genre.

Opinash cites as main artistic influences such icons and legends of electronica as Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Jean Michel Jarre, AWeX, Tom Wax, Jeff Mills, and Laid Back. While inspirations such as these do point to certain attributes of an artist in general, these musicians mean much more to Opinash’s music in particular. His undertones have much in common with Depeche Mode, while his mode of music writing brings together the uplifting, colorful melodies of Kraftwerk and the epic, wordless narratives of Jean Michel Jarre. The result is a refreshingly unique amalgam that demands dancing and effectively works also as music for the casual listener.

Opinash, who was born and raised in Denmark, has been writing and producing music since the 1980s. He cut his teeth in the world of digital music on the popular FastTracker program for composing songs,

Electronica band Factions releases new self-titled LP

The eclectic digital music group known as Factions has released their long-awaited, self-titled LP record, “Factions.” The record has been proudly published on the Genre Electronica Records independent music label without financial support from the corporate music industry. It is composed of six original tracks for an approximate total listening time of half an hour. Colorfully nuanced, masterfully textured, and founded on groove after groove of booming back beats, “Factions” by Factions is much more than an EDM album, one which fans of any genre can take interest in.

Factions cite among main artistic influences such popular acts as Hardwell, Getter, Lucky Date, Mak J, Kavinsky, Botnek, Daft Punk, Tiësto, Armin Van Buuren, and Deadmau5. Intuitively, their definitive album has many of the attributes which first made the dubstep sound recognizable (and unstoppable) in the first decade of the new millennium. Nevertheless, each member of Factions has a sonic character that stands out as unique against those of his band mates, giving the LP twists and turns not unlike those of a compilation.

Additionally, “Factions” is a concept album for the modern era.

“We created an idea about a futuristic society that has reached it’s apex and is on the verge of collapse,” writes Factions. “This overall feel of the record carries through the rise and falls of the energy in the album. The title ‘Factions’ actually relates to the process in which it was created, as well, because of the different people that came together, put in efforts as a group, and made one solid project as a whole.”

This amalgam is at the heart of the overall Factions tone, and is part of what makes listening to the LP so satisfying.

“The team that created this album was diverse,” they write, “and therefore the album itself is diverse. The genres found on the album range from house music to dubstep and beyond and serve to reflect the title, the team, and the message, ‘Factions.’”

The band has been described elsewhere as “a group of students that have wholeheartedly devoted themselves to going after their goals in life; each individual student brings a different component into the mix biased on their techniques and background. Most members of this team started with music at very early ages and started the pursuit of producing high-quality music out of the passion of listening to it.”

“Factions” by Factions is available online worldwide.

MfLI releases new single ‘Suzan’

The composer and producer of ambient music known as MfLI has released his latest single, “Suzan.” The track has been released as an independent accomplishment proudly without support of the corporate music industry. Uplifting, bright, colorful and effervescent, “Suzan” is a testament to MfLI’s taste, experience, and imagination in the European electronica underground.

MfLI is a Finnish DJ and digital composer who makes his home in Helsinki. In “Suzan,” MfLI has constructed an eponymous ode, homage and tribute to a woman whose character, spirit and smile are well-represented in its bubbling opening notes, flowing melodies and inspirational warmth. The track was re-posted and shared more than a hundred times in the first week of its private publishing on MfLI’s personal SoundCloud account, and played more than a thousand times within the first week.

“I mainly work as a producer with house, trance, chillout and ambient music,” MfLI writes. “[DJing] is my serious second life :).”

MfLI’s music is unaffected by the trend of dubstep which overran electronica undergrounds in the US and Europe between 2005 and 2010, favoring instead the original methods of digital songwriting, which utilize fugues and minimal synthetic instrumentation to achieve power and emotional release. He writes of his methods only that, “Ableton and Mixmister are my chosen platforms. Check out my sample DJ Mixes online (link provided below).”

MfLI admits that he sometimes performs live, though perhaps not as often as he once did. “I DJ very rarely and I’m really picky with the venues.”

This is not a problem for fans of MfLI new and old, however, since his music is being distributed worldwide and can be heard virtually anywhere with the help of a smart phone or computer.

“Suzan” by MfLI is available everywhere digital music is sold online. Fans of dance, trance, and electronica in general will be enthused.

New York Electronica Artist Trinity Sin Releases New Single, “Over It”

Trinity Sin has released his first new single since 2010, the electronica dance track, “Over It”

Trinity Sin

New York’s up-and-coming dance/electronica artist, Trinity Sin, has released “Over It,” his first major public release since 2010’s “Lollipop Eyedrops 2.0.” The song is upbeat with smooth, crystalline melodies and quick, although unhurried, electronic percussion. It showcases the modern harmonic use of autotuned vocal tones in the style popularized by artists such as Lady Gaga and Cher, and solidifies Trinity Sin’s claim to the New York underground dance subculture.

Trinity Sin is the first professional music project by New York native Ray Decker, who grew up in the small town of Wellsburg as the youngest of three siblings. His lyrical style was honed through the writing of poetry, but he soon turned to penning songs, which he did not begin to sing until much later. In the earliest stages of his artistic development, Decker did not take his budding craft seriously, but after completing several whole songs decided it was time to sing them, which MySpace-borne performances became the basis of Trinity Sin.

His first track, “Lollipop Eyedrops,” was released on iTunes in 2009, but Decker says this release fell short of his expectations: “[I] was not proud of the song itself,” he says. Still, it was his first song released on iTunes, so he revisited it in 2010, re-mixed and re-mastered the score, and added a new, more-polished vocal track to it before releasing it again as version 2.0, “Simply because [I] wanted to make it better,” he says. “I succeeded.”

Of songwriting Trinity says, “The point of my music isn’t about the money I can, can’t, or won’t make. It’s about the connection I can have with people, and I would rather that than any amount of fame or money.” Still, money is as much an obstacle for Decker as it is for any new artist. “I would do music for the rest of my life if the equipment was cheaper,” he says.
