Digital music legend Andy Pickford releases remastered LP ‘Terraformer’

The digital music legend known as Andy Pickford has released the remastered version of his classic full-length album, “Terraformer.” Originally his second LP to be released on the Centaur label, this remastered record has been published on the Lazydragon music label. The mammoth album is comprised of 13 original tracks for a total playing time of one hour and 20 minutes, making for a fantastically comprehensive treatment of Pickford compositions. Old fans will be thrilled to hear “Terraformer” with sonic details, textures, and clarity like has never before been possible, and new fans will find Pickford’s music as arresting as it was upon its debut release in 1994.

This remastered LP is the third major re-release from Pickford this summer, following on the heels of his masterpiece, “Maelstrom,” in June and the gorgeous “Lughnasad” in late July (commemorating the actual date of the Gaelic harvest festival, Lughnasad).

“Terraformer” is often regarded as the rival of Pickford’s “Maelstrom” as being a favorite among his works, though the albums are stylistically dissimilar in many ways. “Maelstrom” is more ambient and epic in thematic scope, while “Terraformer” picks up where his earlier “Replicant” left off in tones reminiscent of the Blade-Runner setting, from which that album takes its name. Pickford cites as main artistic influences for “Terraformer” the likes of Vangelis, Jarre, and Tangerine Dream, among whose highly regarded company Pickford’s music certainly belongs.

Speaking candidly of the album himself, Pickford writes, “The compositions, as with all of my material, are varied and melodic. It’s hard to believe this now, but the use of upfront percussion and aggressive sequencing, alongside traditional synthesized backdrops and set into recognizable song-like structures, was still in relatively early days in that field.”

Considered one of the early pioneers of electronic music, Pickford’s albums represent some of the first LPs in the digital genre, and all instruments used herein are exceedingly rudimentary by modern standards. Included among the tracks on “Terraformer” are the groundbreaking singles, “The Furnace,” “Darklands,” and “Djangotron,” the latter of which was inspired by the compositions of Ennio Morricone (“The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,” “Once Upon a Time in the West”).

Several Pickford songs intended for “Terraformer” were not originally included and were later released on “Dystopia.” For this remastered version, one of these, “Apocalypse of Love,” has been included as a bonus feature.

Digital music legend Andy Pickford releases remastered LP ‘Lughnasad’

Andy Pickford has released the remastered version of his widely cherished LP record, “Lughnasad,” to broad critical and fan acclaim. The original “Lughnasad” was the final Pickford album to be released before his eight-year hiatus from solo work, during which he collaborated with a bevy of other respected artists. It is comprised of 15 tracks for a total of one and a half hours’ worth of stunning, arresting music.

The sound of “Lughnasad” is a shift from previous Pickford records in that it is more ambient and progressive in tone and style, by far the most experimental of his LP albums. He makes profound use of Schumann resonances, which are a set of spectrum peaks in the extremely low frequency portion of the Earth’s electromagnetic field. These reverberations have been known to synchronize to the frequencies of human brainwaves during the dream state.

“Thus,” Pickford himself explains, “the sound is designed to interact with your own imagination, to bring you relaxing visions and make you feel as if you’ve experienced something more than great music.”

The effect is a soothing, calming album the likes of which no artist has ever before composed.

Interestingly, “Lughnasad” was never mastered before its debut, the artist having decided that the raw mix could not be better defined at the time. The present incarnation of Pickford’s album is not a remastered version in the strictest sense, therefore, but rather a newly mastered version with carefully sculpted nuances not appearing in the original. The added depth, texture, and scope these provide cannot be overstated.

Speaking of the difference this has made, Pickford writes, “[The mastering] has produced a wonderfully rounded, dynamically expressive sound which sounds great even using a surround sound system, and which is especially impressive on headphones.”

In addition to its other remarkable traits, “Lughnasad” also features vocals by Rachel Cohen, of popular and notable Welsh bands Karnataka and the Reasoning.

Lughnasad is named for the ancient Gaelic festival which was celebrated in Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man. It ushered in the beginning of the harvest festival, 31 July through 1 August, and shares the official release date of Pickford’s album of the same name. He has stated that of his full-length records, “Lughnasad” is his personal favorite.

Electronica legend Andy Pickford releases new album ‘Maelstrom’

The pioneer of digital music known as Andy Pickford has re-released his seminal LP record album, “Maelstrom,” to today’s global online audience. The album is a remastered version and presents a crisp, fresh, dynamic sound to Pickford fans both new and old. It contains over an hour’s worth of remarkable and evocative electronica music listening, and remains one of the most important albums to modern techno and EDM subgenres ever released. Originally distributed in 1995, “Maelstrom” became a staple measuring stick for other important digital composers of the time, such as The Chemical Brothers, The Crystal Method, and Moby. Though Pickford had already been cutting records by 1983, “Maelstrom” became one of his best loved LP releases, and is even more relevant and striking today than it was twenty years ago.

Pickford himself cites as artistic influences artists such as Tangerine Dream, Jean-Michel Jarre, Vangelis, The Orb, Boards of Canada, and various progressive rock bands. Audiophiles will easily discern elements of each of these acts in “Maelstrom,” particularly in terms of tone and timbre. Pickford’s compositions do have inspirational, passionate chord progressions that are reminiscent of the Greek musician Vangelis, who is best known for “Chariots of Fire.” “Maelstrom”’s tracks also share much with the dreamy, early ambient work of The Orb, whose “Little Fluffy Clouds” single helped to bring European house music to North American radio stations during the alternative music explosion. An all-time classic of electronic music across the genres, “Maelstrom” is a legitimate godfather of electronic rock, ambient, chillout, and Berlin-school music.

Andy Pickford’s first record, “Linear Functions,” was released in ’83. 1992 saw his move to the Centaur music label, on which he published four records, “Replicant,” “Terraformer,” “Dystopia,” and the original release of “Maelstrom.” Throughout the nineties he produced album after album, including popular releases “Xenomorph” and “Nemesis.” Again from Centaur came his hit 2003 record, “Lughnasad,” which furthered his global fame and has since become one of his most important releases to date. A clutch of LPs in collaboration with other EDM writers, as well as several excellent solo EPs have also been published in the last few years.

This new version of Andy Pickford’s, “Maelstrom,” is an absolute must for any audiophile, and serves as a fantastic soundtrack for the summer of 2013.
