Rhythmic Remix releases debut LP, “Contrastrations”

Electronica instrumental album showcases unique vision and songwriting

Nick Mitchell is a music business student at Lebanon Valley College. He’s also a familiar face at the school’s Music Industry Student Association, and Revolution Music Conference. If that wasn’t enough, Mitchell is also the president of Freedom Rings, Lebanon Valley College’s LGBT alliance club and the business manager for the campus newspaper, La Vie Collegienne. Somehow, he also finds the time to create his own music. All that experience should become very useful once Mitchell – or Rhythmic Remix – gets his career in the music industry started. And that day is coming very soon.

As Rhythmic Remix, Mitchell has announced the release of his debut electronica album, “Contrastrations.”

Unlike standard electronica fare, the tracks on “Contrastrations” feature virtually no looping and few samples. A melody plays, and might be repeated once or twice, but after that it’s gone. The result is an organic production that feels something like avant-garde jazz performance reworked as a free jam garage session – if you set the whole thing on a spaceship.

Rhythmic Remix is inspired by other great producers and artists like Daft Punk, Deadmau5, and Milton Jackson. He describes the motivation behind the unique musical style as a desire to avoid the endless looping and sampling of traditional electronic music.

“Well, of course this music does not contain lyrics, but my goal was to create an album out of the ordinary. Contrastrations means contrasting orchestrations. Within each song, you will hear contrasting passages that almost make it sound like more than one song. This album includes a variety of different sounds, mostly taken directly from Logic Pro. Overall, I wanted to create an electronic album that strayed away from repetitive, because a lot of electronic albums loop over and over, and I wanted to minimize that here.”

The ever-changing melody and varied themes give “Contrastrations” a cinematic feel, and the sense of a larger story is present across the album. Give “Contrastrations” a listen and find out for yourself.

Neeko releases debut single “Be Your Man”

At the age of 16, pop singer is already a sensational talent

Nico Shlaimoun has been singing for a long time – the artist says he was singing before he could talk.

Born May 26, 1996 in London England, the young artist was acting and singing on television, in film and on stage from a very early age. He attended the World class Sylvia Young Theatre School in London and it was there that he developed his passion for music.

It’s no surprise then that at the age of sixteen, he’s already releasing his debut single. As Neeko, the artist recorded “Be Your Man” at the Paramount Recording Studios in Hollywood, and now the single is ready to make its debut November 15.

Neeko moved to southern California in 2011 to pursue his passion for singing, and has quickly moved up the ranks and earned a legion of fans. “Be Your Man” is just the first step in taking that passion for music to the next level and sharing it with the world.

With his distinctive vocal style and urban sensibility, Neeko fuses pop with hip-hop and labels his unique sound as “urban pop.”

Neeko’s influences include artists like Drake, Kanye West, Justin Beiber, Frank Ocean. The impact those performers have had on Neeko is evident in the arrangements and production of “Be Your Man” – a slick and catchy pop song with a hip hop vibe.

“Be Your Man” is of course, a love song. It’s about devotion, and commitment. Neeko might sum up the meaning behind “Be Your Man” better than anyone else.

In his own words: “The message to listeners is that there are only a handful of guys who know what a girl really wants.”

Neeko is currently at work recording new material for his upcoming debut album, which is scheduled for release sometime next year. If “Be Your Man,” is any indication, it’s an album to look out for.

In Their Thousands release “Cellars” EP to critical acclaim

Irish quartet’s sophomore album pushes reputation even higher

The members of In Their Thousands have a clear idea of what they what to do – and following convention isn’t part of the plan.

“We try to make a sound that’s alternative and have an alternative message in the music and lyrics. That things don’t have to be done in the ’normal’ or mainstream way. We also try to get across the vocal harmony aspect of the band and in some way for us I think that signifies pulling together to make a collective noise.”

It’s a good thing too, because that willingness to experiment is part of the reason why the Irish quartet has already developed a reputation for crafting clever, intricate alt-pop anthems full of atmosphere and emotion.

Their first album put the band on the map as artists of significance, with the potential to take the international stage. Their second EP album, “Cellars,” does nothing to dispel the notion that In Their Thousands is well on their way to being the next big thing.

Influenced by artists like Jeff Buckley, Fleet Foxes, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Pearl Jam, and Bon Iver, it should come as no surprise that their sound is organic but never simple, and emotive but not overwrought.

The album’s lead track, “Effort for the Waste,” has a lively Irish-folk guitar melody that contrast and intertwine with the roaring melancholy of the vocal harmonies. “Low Tide” is a more straightforward indie-pop creation. Shimmery guitars and rock solid drums create the perfect backdrop for the vocal melody. That’s common for In Their Thousands – blending unusual elements with the familiar, supported by absolute mastery of the fundamentals and a depth of feeling that imbues every note with deeper meaning.

In Their Thousands is currently engaged with the Play On The Day competition, part of the Guinness Arthur’s Day music festival. Play On The Day is the largest musical competition in Ireland. In Their Thousands has made it to the final round. After they finish conquering Ireland, expect to see them taking on other audiences very soon.

Earl Whitaker releases “Song of Love” single

R&B’s latest hit is a throwback to the classics

Earl Whitaker started singing with the church choir as a child, and he’s kept on going ever since. The singer, songwriter, producer, and publisher has written for and performed with acts like Positive Choice and Black Ivory on the Buddah music label. That experience allowed Whitaker to opened for artists such as Ashford and Simpson, The Stylistics, Blue Magic, The Dramatics and The Chi-Lites. As a backing musician, he’s lent his talents to artists like The Drifters and Fred Parris and the Five Satins.

Now, Earl Whitaker is taking his musical career to the next level with the announcement that he’s releasing his latest single, “Song of Love.”

“Song of Love” has a definite old-school vibe, with backing melodies that sound culled from the best of the 70s soul jams Whitaker listened to all those years ago. Jazzy keyboards, and funky guitar are layered atop a high-hat rhythm that sets a perfect backdrop for Whitaker’s easy-flowing vocals.

“Song of Love” is a message in a bottle, a plea to be heard. Whitaker says his message is about finding the courage to share your emotions, in pursuit of a human connection with another heart.

It’s ok to express ones feelings towards someone else.”

Equal parts Aaron Neville and Barry White, Earl Whitaker’s tenor style soars and twists hypnotically with adroit felicity. “Song of Love” is the perfect showcase for Whitaker’s amazing vocal talents.

With such an old-school sound, it’s no surprise to learn that some of Whitaker’s biggest musical influences include classic acts like Earth, Wind, & Fire and Peabo Bryson. But Whitaker also takes a cue from some unusual sources, like the Beatles, and country-pop singer and songwriter B.J. Thomas.

If you’re a fan of classic, old-school soul and R&B, check out Earl Whitaker’s “Song of Love.”

Super Squid releases debut album, “Surf Party”

Experimental rock band defies conventions and boredom at the same time

Super Squid is one of those acts that’s hard to pin down. They don’t have a signature sound, so much as a signature attitude. Occasionally melodic and ethereal, occasionally hard-edged and gritty, the only consistent truth behind Super Squid is that they’re always weird – and joyously so.

“Super Squid is the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Scott J. Breaud and his wife Carolyn Breaud. What started as a home project grew into a full production experimental rock band. Born from boredom of cookie cutter bands, Super Squid is an attempt to bring back musical purity. The band’s motto: no riff is off limits. Super Squid’s numerous musical styles represent the eclectic tastes of the members. Drawing from 70’s prog to 80’s punk, from Abba to Zappa, Super Squid settles into an approachable avant-garde rock.”

The opening salvo in their war against bland music is “Surf Party,” an album that, like the band, defies easy categorization.

The title track of the album, “Super Squid Surf Party” is airy, twinkling, and vaguely mystical, as if the Go-Go’s and the Flaming Lips had a love child and fed it nothing but tabs of X.

Hot on the heels of the shimmery sweetness of “Super Squid Surf Party” comes “Submersive War,” a roiling, driven-by-madness rock song that shakes you out of your reverie in a hurry.

That’s the way “Surf Party” goes. Each track is its own journey – with its own rules, and no outside limitations to what might spring from the minds of Super Squids’ creative geniuses.

Elements of Marilyn Manson, Smashing Pumpkins, Tom Waits, and anything else that strikes their fancy is all grist for their every-changing mill, creating a sonic tapestry that’s infinitely variable and never predictable.

The band sums it up with just a few words. “Forget the formats. Forget the formulas. Remember the fun. Remember the art.” Lucky for us, that’s exactly what Super Squid has done.

Special Request Featuring Rey T Announce Release Of “Badunkadunk” Single

R&B group’s latest release is a feel good hit that can’t be denied

R&B group Special Request Featuring Rey T has announced the release of their latest single, “Badunkadunk,” and like all their tracks, it’s a high-energy, boisterous affair that will leave a lasting impression.

Reynard Thomas, aka Rey T, has a very distinct vocal presence that sets the group apart from their contemporaries. Backed up by Mark Hunter (aka Hunter) on guitar and keyboards, Gary Hunter (aka G Hunter) on keyboards, Robert Taylor (aka Rob) on bass, Dominic (aka Dom) on saxophone, clarinet, and horns, and Nelson Yee (aka Nels) on the drums, the band gives Thomas a lush backdrop to ply his lyrical talents.

With influences like Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Luther Vandross, and Prince, it’s easy to see the parallels between Special Request Featuring Rey T, and the best performers in R&B.

“Badunkadunk” is a bouncing, smoothly-executed paean, with a snappy jazz rhythm and airy keyboard melody that’s as catchy as it is enchanting.

An ode to that certain part of female anatomy, Rey T says that “Badunkadunk” also contains a promise.

“This single lets women know that men will look at like any woman’s backside, no matter what the size – big or small – and enjoy the view.”

Over the course of their musical career, Special Request Featuring Rey T has performed with such notable acts as The Ohio Players, James Brown, The Whispers, Atlantic Starr, Lenny Williams, After Seven, Dwayne Wiggins, Ray Charles, Millie Jackson, John Tesh, and the Manhattan Transfer – but as the release of “Badunkadunk” shows, pretty soon they’ll be a headline act themselves. Special Request Featuring Rey T has 8 CD’s available. The 7th CD entitled I’m The Only One was officially released on March 6, 2012. With over 15 million plays on their myspace music page, Special Request Featuring Rey T is well positioned to take things to the next level soon.

Green Grass Rollers keep on trucking with release of two albums

Southern rock trio release first album today, follow up to come later this month

If you’ve never heard the Green Grass Rollers before, don’t worry. That’s about to change. The Virginia-based trio has announced the release of not one album, but two. Their signature blend of southern rock, pop, and funk has earned them fans at every live show, and now they’re bringing that experience out of the clubs, and into your speakers.

The first album, “Po’ Mofos” comes out November 5. The follow-up, “Good Times & Flash Fires,” drops November 14.

The Green Grass Rollers call their music “thrash-grass,” which describes their unique mashup of pop, funk, bluegrass, and rock and roll perfectly. Gritty, high-gain guitar melodies, and bass lines so low and muddy they might have been dredged from the bottom of the Mississippi River, with drum rhythms that wouldn’t sound out of place in a western swing band – except for the hopped up tempo, that is. It’s a combo that’s hard to resist.

“Po’ Mofos” is the first album to drop, and it’s a blockbuster opening.

“Restless & Weary,” the first track on the album, has a driving, rockabilly beat that sounds like a steam train barreling down the tracks, while the soaring guitar and rollicking bass provide a perfect counterpoint. “A New Wind” channels the best of Neil Young, with just a dash of bluesy attitude. The rest of the tracks are just as catchy.

Following up on “Po’ Mofos” is “Good Times & Flash Fires” – which shows a different side of the band. The songs on “Good Times & Flash Fires” are a little more mellow, although the trio never stops rocking. The title track features an intricate, bluegrass-influenced guitar melody, and a minimalist ambiance that gives the vocals plenty of room to move. “Summer’s Over” has a melancholy, acoustic guitar that splashes images and emotions like a picture-perfect

The trio have been playing together off and on for the last 15 years – it shows in the depth of their music, and the way the band plays together seamlessly to create an unforgettable experience at every show.

“Overall, the message in our music is about dealing with the experiences of life. Going through the good times and bad times, and trying to find balance in learning along the way – meanwhile, having a great time in the process. Making sense out of this world, by creating and sharing one thing that everyone can enjoy and relate to.”
