Tiny and the Underground Funk Squad release new LP ‘M4YB (Music For Your Butt)’

The electro-funk rock crew from the Netherlands known as Tiny and the Underground Funk Squad have released their latest and greatest LP record album, titled, “M4YB (Music For Your Butt).” The album is comprised of 11 original tracks for an approximate total of one hour’s worth of excellent listening. A zany, endlessly fun and often hilarious record, “M4YB” by Tiny and the Underground Funk Squad is one of the most entertaining music collections produced this year, and one no lover of funk rock should miss.

The sound of “M4YB” is a collage of various style stemming from the Underground Funk Squad’s diverse musical influences. Tiny himself cites as favorites such legends as Prince, George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic, Kraftwerk, Jean Michel Jarre, and Daily Dose of Funk.

He writes, “In the ’80s I became a huge Prince fan and all musicians that came with him. That’s when I came to listen to George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic. I went to one of their concerts and I was hooked. I never saw and heard anything like that. It was amazing.”

Naturally, the fostering roots of P-Funk run throughout the deep grooves of the Underground Funk Squad. Their style and tone are far from sounding too derivative, however, thanks to a bevy of other favorites the other Squad members bring with them in kind. These include (but are by no means limited to) the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, PTFI, Zootzilla, Ronkat Spearman, and The DDoF Collective. The blend of these sounds makes for extremely energetic and danceable music listening, even more so than one might already suppose.

For certain, Tiny and the Underground Funk Squad agree on one thing in the end (and part of it seems to be inspired by the infamous Stevie Wonder episode of the Cosby Show):

“We need to get the funk back. It’s time to jam on the one.”

“MY4B” by Tiny and the Underground Funk Squad is available online worldwide.

California rap duo GP’z release definitive record ‘Street Album’

The rappers and songwriters known as GP’z have released their definitive full-length record, titled, “Street Album,” to widespread fan applause. The long-awaited record contains fully 17 original tracks for an approximate total listening time of over an hour. It has been published on the Support Street Music record label. This comprehensive collection of GP’z tracks showcases the standout talents of GP’z members Khan Gotti and Propayne James to a T, and serves as an indelible reminder that the hip-hop scene will never die.

Citing as main artistic influences the likes of legends such as Tupac Shakur, E-40, Tech N9ne, Krayzie Bone, and Ice Cube, Propayne James and Khan Gotti began recording the GP’z project in late 2009. In a show of titanic creative force and urban poetry, Propayne and Khan completed their record in under a single month. Tragically, however, fans have had to wait for more than three years to enjoy this majestic work of art.

“Due to personal circumstances,” writes Gotti, “the album was lost. Now recovered in its entirety, it is being released for the first time as Support Street Music’s first full album.”

Upon being asked to describe the group’s musical background, the GP’z write, “We started rapping to beats as young children and have always had a passion for making music. As cousins, we both’re doing our own thing, and then we finally came together in the end of ’09 to create the ‘Street Album.’”

The “Street Album” is a heavy-hitting rap disc chock-full of groove, rhymes and lines, but it isn’t all strictly fun. The GP’z write intellectually viable and socially conscientious material in which any professor of cultural anthropology would take interest. Topics range from life in urban America to politics and even philosophy.

“Being from the street doesn’t mean being a man and handling your business,” writes GP’z. “There is too much party music out there for the rap genre – this is something to make you think. Conscientious street music!”

Fans of hip hop and rap everywhere owe it to themselves to give this overdue amazement a proper listen.

EL Quintessential releases new single ‘Believe’

The rapper and songwriter known as EL Quintessential has released his capital new single, “Believe.” The track is the most significant release to date from this awe-inspiring, explosively creative wordsmith and singer. The track has been released in three concurrent versions, the standard, the freestyle, and the instrumental. The freestyle version has been stamped with the Explicit Lyrics denotation.

“Believe” is a melodic, well-written track with an excellent back beat that is none too invasive, and which allows EL Quintessential enough space to move around lyrically. It’s themes are romantic, as the artist himself candidly explains.

“This [track] is about faith,” EL writes, “and the concept of believing in something you can’t quite see.

The lead track ‘Believe’ is inspired from real events. After going out five or six times with a beautiful young lady who shall remain unnamed, she started telling me to stop telling her how strongly I felt about her. She said she understands we like each other but ‘it’s never really going to get any deeper than that because liking is all human beings are capable of. People concoct dreams and talk of love but the concept does not exist.’

“She went on [EL continues], ‘It’s just a matter of time before you find a job, another girl or just something else that will make all the words you’re about to say irrelevant.’ I asked her how about people that stay together for years until death. She replied that people that do stay together for a long time do it out of convenience, or one reason or the other.

“At the time, deep down I actually felt the same way, we were both jaded, but there was something about the certainty of her words that changed me forever. I knew it really couldn’t be that way. The more she continued trying to convince me, the more I found out that I actually did believe in love, simply because I wanted to believe in it. She didn’t, so it didn’t exist for her, but I did and so it did for me.

“The reality became clear to me [EL Quintessential concludes]: it exists if you believe, and even though I couldn’t prove it to her, and even though I eventually lost her, I still have this song as a testament to the memory of what could have been, and as a reminder to never stop searching for what I believe in.”

While this incredibly philosophical inspiration is moving and thought-provoking, it is perhaps the freestyle version of “Believe” that will excite the enthusiasm of hip-hop lovers everywhere. While at heart it is the same track, the freestyle version showcases the stupifying talents of EL Quintessential perhaps better than the actual song, itself.

“The B-side to the track [freestyle] came from me warming up in the studio prior to recording the actual track. At the time someone suggested I freestyle to the instrumental to warm up. I asked if they wanted me to freestyle about a specific topic in mind, and someone asked if I could try to use every letter of the alphabet in alphabetical order and encapsulate that in my freestyle.”

Whether the reader can believe it or not, the evidence is plain to hear.

“If you listen carefully enough you’ll hear me pull it off,” writes EL. “I subtly use A, B, C, D, E all the way through to Z.”

The result must be heard to be believed – but then, that’s the point of the song, isn’t it?

“Believe” by EL Quintessential is available online worldwide.

Arlin Godwin releases LP ‘The Secret Life of Boys’

The legendary electronica artist known as Arlin Godwin has released his seminal LP record, “The Secret Life of Boys,” to widespread critical and fan acclaim. The album, which has received accolades from all spectrums of the global audiophile underground, is comprised of 12 original compositions for an approximate playing time of 50 minutes, making for a round and comprehensive Godwin experience. Built upon excellently danceable beats and colorful waves of harmonic melodies, Godwin’s “Secret Life of Boys” is largely considered one of the most beautiful full-length works of digital music ever produced, in the house music subgenre or any other.

Godwin began playing music by ear at the age of 5. He cites as main artistic influences the music of greats such as Prince, the Pet Shop Boys, Trent Reznor, Moby, and M8. Currently hailing from the musical hotbed of the Washington, DC area, he has been writing and performing his music for more than a decade. His considerable repertoire includes four full-length records, three extended-play releases, and a long, storied list of singles and demo tracks. He has been nominated for the Washington, DC Area Music Association’s WAMMIE Award more than 20 times, and has walked away with it twice in the electronica music category.

Upon being asked directly about the connotation his record may hold for his legion of fans, Godwin comments both candidly and concisely.

“This album was inspired by what goes on at gay bath houses,” he writes.

With song titles such as “God Damn You’re Beautiful,” “Boy Seventeen,” and “Glamor & Damage,” it’s clear that much verve and sensuality pulses in the veins of this passionate album, but it isn’t all devil-may-care romance. Tracks such as “It’s About Your Soul” and the delicately toned “Got a Lot of Static” imply even more complex, mature themes. It is worth noting that while Godwin’s record may be suggestive, it isn’t crass at any point – the black flag of the “Parental Advisory, Explicit Lyrics” label is appropriately absent.

Godwin was originally signed to the San Francisco label, INgrooves, in 2003, where he joined the family that included Tina Turner, Thievery Corporation, The Crystal Method, Jimmy Buffet, Jody Whatley, Paul Oakenfold and Dolly Parton. His live performances commenced in June 2004, since which time he has entertained nearly 300,000 fans. During his time leading the popular digital act, Delphinium Blue, Godwin opened for Crystal Waters, Ultra Nate, Ari Gold, and Sophie B. Hawkins.

Lanre releases single ‘Sweet Brown Eyes’

The singer-songwriter known as Lanre has released his latest and greatest single, titled, “Sweet Brown Eyes,” to uniformly enthusiastic response. The song is a groovy blend of soul, jazz, and rhythm ‘n’ blues, and showcases the remarkable singing talents of this fantastic up-and-coming musician. A track with as much heart as it has romance, “Sweet Brown Eyes” is certain to put Lanre on the entertainment map as an icon of modern soul music once and for all.

Lanre cites as main artistic influences the likes of such legends as R. Kelly, Michael Jackson, Nina Simone, Andrea Boccelli, Bill Withers, Louis Armstrong and (more recently, he notes) Asa. In addition to these, the artist was raised by music-loving parents who exposed him to still other greats. As a result, Lanre grew up in a warm, rhythmic environment full of Bob Marley, Fela, Sade, Ebenezer Obey and King Sunny Ade albums. Intuitively, Lanre’s sound is populated with elements of each of these, perhaps most notably the work of Bill Withers and King Sunny Ade.

“These were my earliest influences in music,” writes the singer. “Since when I was around 8 years old, I would spend considerable amounts of time (and water) in the bathroom singing these songs ’til I got them right. I still sing in the bathroom today.”

Lanre was born in Festac Town of Lagos, Nigeria, and his music has all the gorgeous undertones of the rich culture and popular music of that locale.

“My style of music has a solid foundation in Soul music with fusions of Jazz, R&B and Pop,” Lanre writes. “My first single, ‘Sweet Brown Eyes,’ is a surreptitiously playful expression of the notion that a woman’s feelings and emotions can be read from the look in her eyes.”

Next Door Strangers release new LP ‘Shoot the Cook’

The groundbreaking artists of alternative hip hop called Next Door Strangers have released their remarkable new LP, titled, “Shoot the Cook.” The record is comprised of 13 tracks for a total playing time of approximately 50 minutes. An uncompromising, standout release that demands the attention of audiophiles the world over, “Shoot the Cook” is not only uniquely magnificent, but quite possibly the first album of its kind ever to bump from speakers.

Next Door Strangers fit neither the conventional hip-hop nor rock genres, as they are somewhere in-between and include key elements of both – yet, to call them “rap rock” would be a horrible mistake, as they have nothing in common with those bands typically falling under that dubious banner. First and foremost, their music is rap, and there are excellent beats to back their witty and clever rhymes and lines, but their instrumentation is provided by a bevy of alternative rock elements, including guitars, bass, keys, and more. Their songs are largely written in the verse, chorus, bridge, verse, chorus tradition, and a great deal of their album make for excellent radio play.

Among the best tracks are the coolly sinister title track, “Shoot the Cook,” the flow and groove of “Burn This Slow,” the socially conscientious album opener, “See Sick,” and the stylish cruise anthem, “Cut the Scene.” With surgically precise lyrics and jackhammer delivery, every song on “Shoot the Cook” is an instant classic that has dramatically improved the state of music on planet Earth in general. In time, Next Door Strangers’ “Shoot the Cook” album will almost certainly prove to be one of the most seminal and important records of this decade.

Next Door Strangers cite as main artistic influences an intuitively broad array of acts, including among others Tupac Shakur, Wu Tang Clan, Nine Inch Nails, and Nirvana. If one were to imagine what these four crews might sound like as an orchestra led by ‘Pac, one would be close to the overall Next Door experience.

Speaking of the themes discussed in this record, Next Door Strangers write, “Consider the flip side of the status quo. Question everything. Admit your deeds and your dirt. Taste what’s beneath society’s veil of seasoning… Shoot the cook.”

“Shoot the Cook” by Next Door Strangers is available online everywhere. Get in early. This record is flawless, awesome, awe-inspiring and inspirational.
