Michael Murphy releases debut LP ‘Unmade Bed’

The Canadian singer-songwriter known as Michael Murphy has released his debut solo record LP, titled, “Unmade Bed.” The album is traditional music making at its finest, baring true elements of piano jazz, classic rock, pop, and folk. A surprise collection of much genius, “Unmade Bed” is an instant treasure of songwriting that at once publicly introduces and validates Michael Murphy as one of North America’s most promising and important contemporary artists.

Michael Murphy’s sound on “Unmade Bed” has identifiable characteristics from several of the world’s most beloved musicians and songwriters. His songwriting shows the groundbreaking creativity and broad stylistic range of The Beatles, crossed with the smooth tenderness of Simon and Garfunkel and the Vaudeville piano sensibilities of early Elton John. These wonderful songs are penned by himself, sometimes in collaboration with drummer, engineer and producer, Fred Bouchard.

Murphy’s vocals – which are shockingly excellent yet still second to the brilliance of his songwriting – have the cadence and lugubrious lilt of R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe. In his melodies the playfulness of Paul McCartney is also present. The result is a gorgeous tone that is reminiscent of Morrissey, though neither aggressive, nor arrogant.

The above qualities are more than enough to win “Unmade Bed” endless, well deserved accolades, and any music fan with an ear for intelligent, delightful music by a uniquely talented artist will be enthralled with Murphy for them. Still, the record has more. For Murphy’s first official full-length, he has apparently opted for a slim, mostly unadorned production. No effects trammel his voice, nor add unnecessary frills to his chords. The LP plays out with a natural, live sound as if the performers were in the living room of the hearer, which Murphy and Bouchard have made remarkably simple to imagine.

Regarding the themes of his new record, Murphy writes, “The album explores the human heart through love and its many shapes. There is an underlying thread of hope that no matter what experiences one encounters, one keeps going without becoming jaded.”

“Unmade Bed” by Michael Murphy is available online worldwide beginning spring of 2013.
