Bramble and Coghlan release Christmas 2012 single “The Xmas Song (Remember Why It’s Christmas)”

UK rockers Ian Bramble and John Coghlan have released their 2012 Christmas single, “The Xmas Song (Remember Why It’s Christmas).”

UK rockers Ian Bramble and John Coghlan have released their 2012 Christmas single, “The Xmas Song (Remember Why It’s Christmas).” The song is a rollicking rock tribute to the joy and meaning of the Christmas holiday. “The Xmas Song” boasts cheerful folk overtones and a jumping, vivacious rock ‘n’ roll delivery. It also presages several important occurances in the Bramble and Coghlan timeline, including the up and coming release of Bramble and Coghlan’s full length album (release date pending), and Coghlan’s reforming of The Frantic Four (the original name of popular UK rock band, Status Quo) in March of 2013. “The Xmas Song” is a hand-clapping, foot-tapping seasonal that no fan of Christmas music, nor of the classic rock sound should miss this year.

Bramble’s raw singing style is a cross between the delightful British drawl of John Lennon and the warbling rockabilly tone of Roy Orbison. His famous acoustic guitar work is as rhythmic and driving as fans have come to expect from him, and Coghlin’s drums are tighter than an anchor chain. Coghlan’s drumming style, too, is entirely stripped of all pretention – he drives the band on a two-piece kit: nothing more than a kick drum and a snare drum, with just a hihat and ride for cymbals. Dave Allan of The Popes plays a lively fiddle (two of them in their YouTube video, in fact) for which fiddling he is likewise famous. Also joining Bramble for this season’s single are Richard “Machine Gun” Hoy of The Banned (the name of Ian Bramble’s usual crew) on electric guitar, Jeremy Carroll of Airiel and Leatherat respectively, on bass, and Nicky Bramble singing backup vocs.

Bramble and Coghlan do not often make seasonals, so this is a rare treat for UK folk rock fans. Of the message the song speaks to their fans, Bramble says, “We love to rock, and we love Christmas. All the love this Christmas time should last throughout the year.” It’s a simple lesson, and one that’s worth repeating – especially because Bramble and Coghlan’s “The Xmas Song) is far more fun than hearing “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree…” Again.
